Karyn and family,
I was saddened when I received word of Arvi's passing just a few moments ago from my sister. Like many who may offer thier prayers and blessings, we have never met. I am just one of the thousands of kids who was turned onto soccer by Arvi. I had played in middel school, but was on the football team as a freshman, but never got in a game because i was too small. I turned to soccer the next year and have never looked back. I always enjoyed hanging around the field and watching the varsity that first year as I precticed and played JV. The next year Arvi and I agreed that I would play JV so I could get more playing time in so I could develop. After 2 weeks he called me up to stay. Maybe it does not sound like that big of an impact, but I was probably the first soccer player to wear a varsity jacket. Being a varisty letter winner in HS helped to get me into West Point, graduating in 1981. I just retired in June of 2011 as a Colonel after 30 years of both active and reserve service, including a year in Baghdad in 2005. And thorugh it all I have continued to play soccer. Played at West Point, played while stationed in Germany, Tx and even Iraq. I still play to this day and enjoy the camaraderie of the team. Additionally, I coached several teams while my girls were growing up and our younger daughter pl;ayed in college and still plays today. Once in a while I fil in on her team. It is a hoot. One other point, Arvi not only taught me the love of the game, but I am one of the few that I know that can actually use both feet. So, what may seem like just another kid learnign to play a fun game can actually grow into something so much more. God Bless you and your family. You and Arvi are in my thoughts and prayers.

It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I learn about the passing of Arvi Saar. Besides my father, Coach Saar had the greatest impact on my life, both on and off the soccer field. I will always cherish the opportunities that Arvi gave me to become a better player, and more importantly, a better person. RIP Arvi!

Like Geoff I played for Arvi for three years at IHHS (class of '83). I recalled to my wife that he was the first person of authority/teacher we called by his first name. We even played "ARVI" -- a sort of HORSE game but soccer. It did not reduce our respect for him.

Very sad to hear the news. I was on his varsity soccer team in 1987/88 at Hills. I remember those days very fondly and he was a great coach and man to be lucky enough to know in my lifetime.

What "Triumph" means in each of our lives, and at which stage of life it will occur, is, of course, only known at the end of our life. Perhaps Arvi's "triumph" occurred earlier on, as his exuberance, curiosity, friendliness, and sense of adventure overwhelmed adversity and Fate. Having established who and how he was, he clearly inspired others...and, especially, Karyn, Taavi and Tara... to interweave "love" and "live," without questioning how long that effort would endure. Surely all the Arvi Saar Family has earned admiration and respect.

His was a simple name
laden with the sound of
the wind
and the eternal snowflakes
of the eyes of Europe.
The cries of the war
took him to the frigid
plains of Argentina.
It might have been
no desire of his
to begin that journey,
accumulation of dreams
of a childhood on an endless
road.
At Montclair State
he laced his memories
with those of others.
He had just begun to feel the earth
longed for a home
his home
our home.
It was an unspoken dream
rooted in our remembrance
of the sounds of war
The crushing heights of the waves
in the Atlantic
The stony edges of the Alps
and the Andes
piercing through the sky.
It was there among the written word
of the classics
that trembling handshakes were
cemented
and the eyes turned
into descents of the soul.
No time shall ever
unlace those memories
for the key to their abode
is forever sustained by
the sounds of feeling.

We met Arvi when our son David played for him at Indian Hills in the Class of 1983. We truly appreciated him as a warm and caring person and a skilled and successful coach. He taught both his players and us, as parents, the virtue of preparation, dedication and sportsmanship. He is a man to missed.

Arvi was a Hall of Fame athlete at Montclair State and a Hall of Fame coach at Indian Hills but, to those of us who had the pleasure of knowing and working with him at Indian Hills, Arvi was, above all, a Hall of Fame "person"... Arvi was a major influence on my own teaching and coaching career at Indian Hills and I am very thankful and honored to have had him as a true friend and mentor for so many wonderful years.

I am so saddened to hear this. Mr. Saar was my Spanish teacher and our Soccer Coach at IHHS. I have not seen Mr. Saar since 1979 but I carried his zest for living, his kind smile, his great stories and his love for soccer in my memories all these years. My sympathies to his family....I met you once long ago when he would have the soccer parties at the house. May your memories of better days with him make your heart smile.

Very sorry to read of the passing of your dear loved one Arvi. Life is such a precious gift and yet so short-lived for the time we exist.
We are comforted by the hope od the resurrection.
God holds out this wonderful hope for all those in the grave. At John 11:25 Jesus said " I AM THE RESURRECTION AND THE LIFE. HE THAT EXERCISES FAITH IN ME, EVEN THOUGH HE DIEA, WILL COME TO LIFE."
Mark 5-38-43 is one of the nine accounts of ones who were resurrected. How comforting to know these thing from the Holy Scriptures. What a blessed reason to hope in God! (John 5-28,29)
The gift of memories of Arvi will bring you great joy and turn into a treasure.
You and yours will receive strength though prayer to God, you will feel comfort by the loving concern of your God-fearing friends, and you will be uplifted by studying God's Word.
Trust in "the God of All Comfort " (Psalms 83-18)
