Joan and family, We were so sorry to hear of Gaeton's passing. He was such a nice man, always pleasant and smiling when I saw him in Denville. He was our accountant for many years and a nice person to know. He was very proud of his family and loved talking about them and showing pictures. You are all in our thoughts and prayers.

Unfortunately, sometimes it is all too easy to remember how someone was during their last days, especially if those days were filled with sickness or difficulties. However, we need to work hard to bring other memories to the foreground to help us remember and paint a picture of the person we knew and how we want to remember them.
For me, my Uncle Gaet was someone who had a profound love for traditions, who freely shared his friends and family, and who had a boundless love for his family. My life is filed with memories of my Aunt Joan and Uncle Gaet sharing their friends freely, whether it was John Burton from Montclair, New Jersey or the Onsys from Cairo, Egypt or the Shaws in West Lothian, Scotland…and there were so many more that they shared with each of us. John became a regular fixture in our lives and the Shaws…the Onsys…helped shepherded me through my first experiences overseas – all because of their love for Gaet and Joan.
He was incredible at making connections and staying in touch with people – long before social networking became the trend – his Sunday morning calls to friends around the world were legendary. He opened his world to those he loved so that they too could have a range of new possibilities and friends. His friends became our friends without boundaries or borders…and he thrived on keeping the connections alive.
It is no surprise that someone who had a love for making connections and sharing his friends also had a love for tradition and family. Growing up, he was a regular fixture at our Sunday dinners and could often be found making wandi – a traditional Christmas cookie – or Halloween donuts with our family. Each time he came to the house, he exploded with pride for his family and eagerly pulled a new picture from an envelope in his pocket calendar, which he kept close to his heart. I can still picture him running up and down the field taking photos of his son’s football games; capturing Andy in a variety of action poses. There was always a new picture of Andy or his beautiful wife Joan and as time passed and his family grew, his images included his daughter-in-law Phyllis and his adorable grandchildren.
Over time, his love and pride for his family couldn’t be contained and the pictures moved from inside his pocket to outside for everyone to see. This was especially true with his grand children who he kept close to his heart and his thoughts by literally wearing ties or a baseball cap with their pictures proudly emblazoned for all to see. In hindsight, the physical manifestation of how he wore a those ties covered with images of his grand children over his heart or a similar cap on his head was just a visual reminder of how he kept his family in his heart and always on his mind.
These were only small memories of my Uncle but as the days and weeks pass, I ask each of you to find endearing memories of who Gaeton Ferraiuolo was to you and to share those memories with each other so that our individual memories become a collective memory, capturing a broader picture of the man he was and the legacy he left behind.
