I came across this obituary while I was doing research for a book that is set in Passaic, NJ. I have only the fondest memories of Father Anthony McLaughlin who served in St. Nicholas Parish in the mid-60's. When I was in the 5th grade, he made a particular impression on me and all my classmates. I think he had just arrived at St. Nick's or he was introducing himself to the 5th graders so we could get to know him better. He tried to engage us and I guess he wanted us to remember him -- so he stood on his head in the corner of our class, his cassock up around his head. Wow. We were amazed and felt so lucky to have this awesome, fun priest in our midst. He had wavy red hair and was very handsome, with the rosiest cheeks. All the girls in St. Nick's school had a big crush on him. If he died at 76 in 2011, in 1963, he was the youngest priest we'd ever known. About 28 years old. I have never forgotten him and remember that we thought he was an A+ addition to our parish.

We were so sad to read of Father's passing. We met him in the Painten' Place in July and had a wonderful chat with him while there. We also found out that he was the Mr. Mac our sons had as a substitute teacher at Valleyview. He made great impressions on them both. Father also subed at St. Catherine's and his homilies were always lively. Rest in peace, Father.

Fr. Mac was a wonderful priest and an even better friend. As principal of Bayley Ellard, he was always there to be a driend to parents and students alike, but you always knew who was in charge. He never asked anyone to do something he was not willing to do - feed gardens, plants flowers, paint ceilings. One of my daughters friends reflected that Fr. Mac's motto to the students was always " Work hard, Play hard, pray hard" Not only did he teach that but he lived that. Fr. Mac will be greatly missed, especially by one deacon who had a special relationship with him and who will always expect the quick comeback. God Bless Fr. mac.

On behalf of the Duncan family we are all very saddened to hear of Father
Anthony's passing. he was such a special man and was part of every wedding,
christening , funeral in our family for as long as I can remember. The last
time we saw him he was officiating my Dad's ,James Duncan Memorial Service
on Long Island . He made the ceremony not only easier for our family but a
celebration for all of us . I loved to hear storys of Malin Head from him
and my Grandmother Francis McLaughlin Duncan and my Great Aunt's Helen and
Bridget McLaughlin and my Cousin Cece Doyle Slack. I did get there with my
sister Rosemary and did see the farm in Malin Head where our Grandmother Fannie McLaughlin and her family were raised , so nice for us we were met by a man J. Doherty who knew our family in the driveway where her farm still stood. I loved how excited Father Anthony was to know that we were able to visit his beloved Donegal, Ireland. He will be missed and loved by all of us and everyone who had the pleasure to know him. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Tony will be greatly missed by me as well as others. I will miss the morning we spent together. Its so hard going to work and not seeing him pull up in his orange car.I will miss him straighten up my produce dept as well as sampling fruit for him. Tony was always there for me, helping me through difficult times in my life, and offering his most useful advise. Tony was always there for my family when my mother and father both had heart attacks. He never met them before but went out of his way to sit with them while they where in the hospital. And when my grandmother passed away he showed up and sat up on the alter. I will miss you so much Tony. I want to say thank you for always being there for me, and thank you for being my best friend. Tom O'Brien A @ P Produce dept.

Father, I wish I could be there at your final rest... My prayers to you and your family (you were a part of my family too) as you will be missed. My Denville visits will not be the same without your terrific hugs or great smile. You were there for me during a tough time in my life. I think I will always have the distinction of being the only bride that kissed you before kissing her husband. I remember saying THANK YOU FATHER, I was so grateful for your help. You did a great job father as we have been married 42 years.

I only knew Fr. Tony for the last five years, but I am a better person because of knowing him for just that short time. My kids knew of him as “Mr. Mac”, a substitute teacher in the Denville Schools. We would often see him holding court at Denville Bagels on Saturday mornings. Then he started filling in on weekends at St. Catherine of Siena in Mountain Lakes where we all got to know him. There he again connected with young people, particularly the altar servers. We also learned of his great sense of humor; I think some parishioners are still laughing at the “Bagpipes in Kentucky” joke he told in one of his sermons! I am grateful to have known him and to have seen the twinkle in his Irish eyes. My condolences to his family and to the Franciscan Sisters who have lost a great friend.

On behalf of The Van Saun family, I would like to extend our deepest condolences to Fr. McLaughlin and his family. I knew Fr. from attending Morris Catholic and he was and always has been a special man. He was always so kind when I saw him in the halls and I also had the pleasure of meeting up with Father after many years when he was a substitute at Lakeview Elementary School. We had lovely chats and he never once not asked about the rest of "the Van Saun Clan" as he called us and especially asking about my mom and dad. He truly was a special soul and will be missed. How ironic to have the word "Laugh" in his name because you could always count on him for a good laugh, smile, and firm hand shake. Its our loss but heavens gain! Rest in Peace

My first memory of Fr. Mac is probably Thanksgiving Dinner 1966 when Aunt Hilda McCarter invited him to join us. He instantly became an Irish member of an Italian Family. I'm not sure if it was Aunt Hilda's coconut cream pie, or my mom Helen Cap's spaghetti sauce that kept him coming back. He married most of the cousins and presided over the funerals with his eloquent speaking and his ability to bring laughter through tears because he knew us all so well. Goodbye Anthony ---Rest in peace - we will miss you!!!

John and I first met Fr. mac as students at Morris catholic. Throughout the years he remained a wonderful and caring friend. He married John and I in 1968 and again for our 25th anniversary Mass. He joked with our oldest son, Chris, the first day of school at Morris Catholic, putting the kid on the spot, as only Fr. mac could, by asking if "John Fragomeni" was his father. Not sure how to respond, Chris later that day asked me what Fr. mac meant. Well, I told him, dad and I were very different in school - I left it at that - to let Chris make up his own mind as to what Fr. Mac meant. We shared many great evenings together that John, myself and our children will always remember. My only regret is that he will not be able to celebrate our 50th - if we make it. God speed good father - you will alwys live in our hearts.

Life is definitely not the same without Father's wit. Father was at my Dad's bedside with me while my Dad passed away. He officiated the declaration of my Dad's bench in Denville a year later. Father touched so many lives so deeply and he guided me spiritually for a long time after my Dad died. I witnessed the miracles that occurred firsthand in his Greystone Park ministry towards the end of his life. He was truly gifted and a comfort to so many people including a coworker of mine. Father's way reminds me of that old Diana Ross' song----- Reach out and touch somebodies hand make this world a better place if you can---- cause Father did just that. Blessings to all because all who knew him have lost a very dear man who was loved by all.

Father McLaughlin served as the principal at Morris Catholic HS during the late '60's and early '70's. He had his hands full most of the time, yet never lost his sense of humor, Irish wit and occasional temper. He was a quick "forgiver" and cared about his students for years after their graduation. We were blessed with his presence at our recent 40th reunion and now send our prayers for a quick journey to heaven. Godspeed - I am sure that you will be in heaven at least an hour before the devil knows you're available!
