Norman Dean Home for Services 16 Righter Avenue Denville, New Jersey 07834 (973) 627-1880 Daily Record 1x Friday Grandma Grace Grace Gladys Caruth, a beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother and longtime resident of Denville, NJ, passed away peacefully on January 29th surrounded by her family. She was born in Union City, NJ on February 1, 1923. An educator and published author, Grace was a woman with many interests, but her first love was children. She began her teaching career at St Michael's school in Netcong and then taught for over 18 years at St. Mary's School in Denville. One of her great joys was meeting her former students. Upon retiring Grace entered the next phase of her life teaching drama through the recreation programs in Denville and Parsippany. She was proud to have directed many plays for the Denville Friends of the Library involving members of the Denville community. She was able to get the best from actors both young and old. Her students often performed at one of her most cherished places, St. Francis Residential Community where she had many friends. Her passion for drama inspired her to write many plays and poems. She was extremely proud to have both a play and a poem published. She received a World Poetry Award and is listed in Who’s Who of American Writers and Poets. In addition Grace worked for the Morris County Superintendent of Elections and for 21 years she taught workshops in area schools as part of the NJ Child Assault Prevention program. Grace was an active member of the Denville Seniors. In 2009 she received the Muriel Hepner Volunteer of the Year Award. She was also a member of the Presby Aires singing group. Recently she was honored to become an Associate of the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother with whom she continued to work for many years after her teaching career. She traveled extensively throughout the United States and Europe with friends and family. One of her cherished moments was being personally blessed by Pope John Paul II. She is predeceased by her husband of 43 years Walter. She is survived by her children Stephen and wife Linda, David and his wife Elizabeth, Judith Gilmartin and her husband Gregory, her adored grandchildren Stephen and wife Denise, Melissa Yonchuk and husband John, Dylan and Amanda Caruth, Allissia, Michael and Matthew Gilmartin and treasured great grand children Maura, Autumn and Jasper Caruth and Brayden Yonchuk. Grace leaves many friends and family who shared her love of a good story. Her family is grateful to her doctors as well as Sister Mary Joan, her friends and staff of St. Francis for their care and support over the years. Grace’s funeral will be conducted from Norman Dean Home for Services 16 Righter Ave., Denville, NJ, www.normandean.com, (please light a candle in memory of Grace on web site),on Monday February 7th at 9am for a 10am Mass of Christian Burial service at St. Mary’s Church Denville, NJ, committal and interment service at Denville Cemetery. Relatives and friends will be received on Sunday February 6th at the funeral home from 2-6pm. In Lieu of flowers donations to Joey Bella Fund 15 Myers Ave., Denville, NJ.
