Mary E. Long passed away peacefully on Sunday January 30, 2011 at the Franciscan Oaks Health Care Center in Denville, NJ at the age of 95. Mary was born in Scranton on August 21, 1915 James E.Smith and Margaret Erbach Smith. She was a graduated from Central High School. She married George H. Long in 1934 and relocated to New Jersey in 1940.
Mary learned bookkeeping on the job at the First National Bank in Belleville, NJ. Later she worked for many years as a Bookkeeper and the Office Manager for the Viola Brothers in Nutley.
While in their 50’s and 60’s, Mary and George accepted responsibility for the upbringing of another family of teenagers when they became guardians of children from a deceased niece of Mary’s, Janet Rogers. Gil, Judy, Kathy and Randy were raised by “Aunt Mary and Uncle George” through their formative years.
Mary and George retired to Lake Naomi in the Pocono’s in 1974, and later moved to St. Petersburg, FL where they enjoyed years of happiness with their old friends. They summered in the Pocono’s to be near family and old friends. When her closest friend, Helen Hayes passed on, Mary relocated to New Jersey to Franciscan Oaks, where she spent the rest of her life. Her family is most appreciative of the wonderful care that she received there.
Although a reserved person, Mary enjoyed life to the fullest and liked to party. She also liked to travel and has seen a bit of the world. Mary would often be seen with her crossword books, concentrating on the latest puzzle. She would play almost any kind of card game and was a whiz at Rummicube. During retirement, she took up ceramics and became quite an accomplished artist. Mary was a member of the Anglican Church.
Her husband predeceased her in 1989 as did her siblings, and close friends, and of her guardian children Randy Rogers.
She is survived by her two sons, George H. Long Jr. and his wife Linda of Dorset, VT, retired executive from Exxon Mobil and Nelson H. Long and his wife Pat of Wyomissing, PA, currently Treasurer of Berks County, PA, and her 6 grandchildren, and her 13 great grandchildren, and her 2 great-great grandchildren, and her guardian children are Gil Rogers of Port St. Lucie, FA, Judy Rogers of Clovis, CA, Kathy Jenks of Maryville,TN, and Gary Rogers of San Antonio, TX.
Relatives and friends will be received on Friday February 11th from 1-3pm with 3pm services at the Norman Dean Home for Services 16 Righter Ave., Denville, NJ www.normandean.com, (please light a candle in memory of Mary on web site), committal and interment services will be private at the Washburn Street Cemetery, Scranton, PA. In lieu of flowers, donations to the charity of your choice.
