DENVILLE - Michael A. Hornick, 90, passed away peacefully at home Friday July 10, 2009 following a brief illness.
Born Sept.20, 1918 in Boonton, N.J., he was a son of the late Martin and Mary (nee Gorlicky) Hornik. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII and upon honorable discharge in 1945 received citations that include American Defense, European-African-Middle Eastern, and Good Conduct Service Medals and a Distinguished Unit Badge. He served in North Africa, Sicily and Italy. He spent the remainder of the war in 1945 in Rome as a member of General Marc Clark's honor guard.
He married the love of his life, Ruth M. Huddy, on June 8, 1946 and they were married 53 years before her death in 1999.
Mr. Hornick lived in Denville since 1950 and lovingly raised his family which includes a daughter, Millicent R. Freeman, Denville, and son, Michael A. Jr., Hopatcong. They survive him along with his cherished grandchildren Charles Freeman, Kyle Freeman, Michael A. Hornick III, and Amanda Hornick,. He also leaves his dear great-grandson, Josiah.
He was predeceased by his sister, Mary Bakarich, and brothers Martin, Joseph, and John.
Before retirement, he was employed for many years as a pressman for the former Boonton Times. He was a member of the Slovak Sokol Boonton Lodge 32 since the age of 16 and former member of VFW Post # 2519. He enjoyed fishing and time spent with family and friends. His gentle good nature and loving kindness to all will be sorely missed.
Visitation will be held Sun., July 19, 2009 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Norman Dean Home for Services, 16 Righter Ave. Denville, NJ, with a brief service at 4:15 p.m. Neighbors and friends are invited to celebrate the life of this good man.
