Norman Dean Home for Services 16 Righter Avenue Denville, New Jersey 07834 (973) 627-1880 Neighbor News, (this is a longer version than what was run in Daily Record family would appreciate if this is printed in your paper, Thank You, Joe Clark) Marie Schmidt, 101, passed away on Saturday March 28, 2009 at her granddaughter’s residence in Morristown, NJ. Mrs. Schmidt was born in Kristianstad, Sweden, on October 1, 1907, the daughter of the late Bernard Pearson and Jennie Stormbom Pearson. She came to America at an early age and lived in Brooklyn, NY. She lived in various cities such as Plainfield, Newark, and Boonton Township, NJ and finally in Rockaway Borough and in 2006 she moved back to Boonton Township, NJ. Mrs. Schmidt was a graduate Registered Nurse from the Englewood Hospital School of Nursing in 1929. She did private nursing in Englewood Hospital, Newark City Hospital and Columbus Hospital in Newark and Holy Family Hospital in Teaneck, NJ. She took refresher courses in nursing at St. Michael’s Hospital, Clara Maass Hospital and Rutgers University all in Newark, NJ. Marie is a 40 year member of Lodge Frithiof #63 of Dover, NJ of the Vasa Order of America, Original Senior of Rockaway, NJ AARP, Alumnae Association of Englewood Hospital, Englewood, NJ and the Rockaway Methodist Church, Rockaway, NJ. She was a former member of the Rock Ridge Community Club, for 46 years from 1937-1983. A former member of the Ocean Beach-Unit #2 in Ocean Beach, NJ. She was a charter member of the first Children’s Club of the Vasa Order of America, and then called Barnklubben #1 under the direction of Helga Hoving. She went on the first trip to Sweden in 1924 and this children’s club danced throughout Sweden, including for King Gustav V and Queen Victoria and the Crown Prince and Princess. In 1929 Marie returned to Sweden as a nurse to 50 children in Barnklubben #1. On this trip Marie was crowned Princess of Kulbergs O-A Lordagen Island on August 17, 1929 of Fillipstad, Sweden. Her husband Herman E. Schmidt predeceased her in 1974. Survived by her son from her first marriage, Robert A. Illig and his wife Roni of White Township, NJ and a daughter Ruth Schmidt Haas and a son in law George of Rockaway Borough, NJ eight grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren and her sister Ann Mari Person of Cleveland, OH. Marie’s funeral services will be conducted at Norman Dean Home for Services 16 Righter Ave., Denville, NJ, www.normandean.com, (please light a candle in memory of Marie and read a full obituary on web site), on Tuesday March 31st at 10:00am. Interment services will be private. Relatives and friends will be received on Monday March 30th from 2-4 and 7-9PM.
