I just heard and I know it is late to be posting here but I hope this message will find its way to Annette, Mark, and Susan. John was my high school chemistry teacher at THS. Later, after I finished college with a degree in chemistry, John and I were colleagues at THS. He was an excellent teacher and a wonderful mentor to other teachers. I will remember his sense of humor and his sincere concern for his students. He was, for me, a model of what a good teacher should be. I was delighted to hear that he had become first the science supervisor and then the superintendent of schools.
John adored his family - he really beamed whenever he talked about his wife and children - I am so sorry for their loss.

Working with John was truly a blessing. He was kind, considerate and sincere, greeting you each day with a smile. He cared about his staff as “people” and often inquired about one’s well-being and family. He enjoyed a good story; loved bragging about his wonderful family; and his infectious laughter reminded us not to take ourselves too seriously. He was demanding yet understanding, and unrelenting in his quest to ensure that each child be provided with the support necessary to achieve success. The students and staff of Teaneck have lost a conscientious Superintendent, concerned educator, and a dear friend.

Mr. C was my chemistry teacher and softball coach at Teaneck High in the late 80s early 90s. I loved him not only b/c he gave me an A+ in chemistry :-) but because he had endless patience and always had a smile. How anyone could deal with a bunch of bratty high school girls playing ball and giving him a hard time without hitting any of us and smiling through it all, I will never know! RIP Mr. C!

I first had the opportunity to meet and discuss issues with John Czeterko while Hal Morris was still Superintendent, and developed a relationship with John after he was chosen to replace Mr. Morris.
What I will always remember, and is so clearly evident in almost all of his pictures, was his ever-present effusive smile, which was always reflective of his genuine warmth. He always greeted me and others with a firm handshake and a genuine interest in asking about the health of his visitors and their family members. He would stay for extended periods after Board of Education meetings to discuss issues that affected the community, despite a very long drive home very late in the evening from meetings that often ended well into the night.
Pancreatic cancer is one of the cruelest of all diseases -- it has a five-year survival rate that hovers just over zero -- but John was determined to persevere and perform his job with tremendous equanimity, despite what is now clear were great difficulties.
Despite a life tragically cut short when he should have been looking forward to spending time with his family post-retirement, he still had the remarkable achievement of spending 33 years, three-fifths of his entire life, rising through the ranks to the top at the Teaneck Public Schools.
I extend my sincerest condolences to his wife, children and extended family on his passing, and offer my heartfelt sympathies to those in the Teaneck Public Schools and Teaneck Board of Education who worked so closely with him, new him on a professional and personal basis, and will be so deeply affected by his loss.

God alone can lead us through death to eternal life. Death casts a frightening shadow over us because we are entirely helpless in its presence. We can struggle with other enemies—pain, suffering, disease, injury—but strength and courage cannot overcome death. It has the final word. Only one person can walk with us through death’s dark valley and bring us safely to the other side—the God of life, our shepherd. Because life is uncertain, we should follow this shepherd who offers us eternal comfort. John always had an open door policy, and I always could stop by and he would give me calm words of encouragement, even in the difficult times. I will surely miss John’s yearly speech on the first day of school on how the parents bring their most treasured possession, (their children) to the school to be educated, and that they should be given the best of care. My condolences to his wife and children.

Besides Jack being one heck of a bartender during the Super Bowl games at the Czeterko home he was the one who convinced me to have my daughter's join the town softball league. After they joined Jack said "okay, now YOU need to be the coach of the team" which I did.
For a few years Jack and I would get up early on Fathers Day and go fishing on the lake, and it was always okay with my wife because she knew that i'm with Jack, who would make sure we arrived home before our kids got up from bed!!
And of course the air conditioners; we always seemed to pick the hotest day (each year) to go over each others home and help each other put in a 150lb. air conditioner in the window. But like Jack said "it makes the beer taste better" after we got done with the task.
Jack will always be in my family's heart and a lifetime of fond memories and will be deeply missed.
With all our sincere love,

Who would have known back then that I would one day work for John as Construction Manager and then Director of Facilities for Teaneck Public Schools. He always gave me the Operations and Maintenance Department all of his support and was very vocal in the District with his acknowledgement of all our accomplishments. I have only known Mr. Czeterko for a little over one year when I first moved to Teaneck. However, in this short time only I have come to appreciate him greatly. His dedication to sports, and his openness to new things made him a champion for the Teaneck High School Crew Team. His vision and leadership allowed the team to move from being a club sport to becoming an official Varsity Sport at the high school beginning with the 2008 Spring Season. This was truly a visionary step, as it opened a sport, which often is seen as an elite sport, to everyone regardless of their background. Teaneck became the first public high school in recent years in the Northern New Jersey area that offers rowing as a sport at no cost to the athlete. We are deeply grateful to him for that leadership. I wish he could have been with us for many more years, but sometimes God allows people to excel in their calling to create life changing opportunities for those around them. I loved Mr. C. He taught me chemistry in 11th grade, and against all odds, I got a 'B' in Chem that year. I never got a better grade in a science class before or since. I still tell a story to this day about our chem lab one day. He had written the formula we were to make on the board and was at his desk hanging out while we concocted whatever it was...not knowing...he had told us it was a surprise. Well, it sure was. It was the scent of artificial banana...but...he had copied the formula down incorrectly and we wound up making it abotu a million times too pungent. I believe the classes in that part of the building had to be relocated for the rest of the day, until the scent of uberbanana had dissipated overnight.
What a lovely man, a joyful, kind, caring person, and a fantastic educator. What a loss for his family, but what a blessing to have had him in all of our lives as briefly as we did. Everyone with kids in the Teaneck public schools has my sympathy, for a better advocate for good teachers never lived.

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.
Do not think of me as gone-
I am with you still- in each new dawn.

Then I thought deep and remembered that he was my chemistry teacher in 1980...and it all came back. He said back then, there was a great effort to encourage women in sciences and he had very few girls in his classes. What was amazing is how he recognized me almost 25 yrs later. But, this is how Mr. Czeterko was... a gentle person who deeply cared about the education and every one of his students. He is the reason why I developed an interest in Chemistry. John was a generous man. By that, I mean he had a generous spirit, giving and full of humor with a terrific smile. He was a good listener, who really engaged parents, Board members and staff alike, made sure they all knew they were an integral part of his decision process, then was not afraid to make the tough choices that a true leader has to make. He was respected by all, and will be deeply missed. I have lost a dear friend and colleague, and am truly saddened by his sudden loss. I hope his family will be comforted by the knowledge that he will be remembered so fondly by thousands of teachers, students, parents and fellow administrators.

I am so saddened to hear of the news of his passing. Mr. Cz was a wonderful and patient teacher, entertaining and kind. He was a wonderful coach and a great role model. I remember working with John when I was secretary to the Asst. Superintdent of Schools in Teaneck. Especially, I remember his sense of humor and consideration for everyone. I looked forward to our chats in the morning while we waited for the coffee to brew. I knew him to be a dedicated husband and father and they always came first in his life. My sincerest sympathy to his family. They are in my thoughts and prayers.

Mr. Czeterko was one of the nicest and most giving, gentile souls I have known. Back in 1984-1986, a wonderful teacher, supportive and dedicated softball coach....and a great addition to THS students and to those who had the priviledge of knowing him. I am grateful to have spent time with him as a student and am deeply saddened at the news of his passing. You will be missed, Mr. C (Coach).

John and I went back a lon way at THS. He was there when I started at the high school in 1984. We took a memorable trip with Flory Perini and David Sosland to Northfield, Illinois in 1996 to look at a restructuring school and stayed at Hamburger University in Northfield, where McDonald's managers attend "college" for two weeks. John was always open and caring and thoughtful, a wonderful part of the Teaneck School System. He will be missed.

Although I often came to add my two cents to how things could be better, John was always thoughtful and gracious through my advise as well as through my complaints. He was willing to share ice tea and listen because he cared about the children of Teaneck. He always asked about my family and shared stories about the family he clearly loved so much. His warmth and humor will be sorely missed.

I am just so shocked to have heard of Mr. Czeterko's passing: in addition to being a dedicated educator, his infectious humor helped us all along at THS. I was privileged to have performed my senior service under his guidance and will never forget him.
God bless you, John, and your family in this time of such terrible grief.
