While working as a volunteer at the Franklin Mineral Museum, I first met Joe during his visits to the curator, John Cianciulli. After John passed away, I encountered Joe more often as he stepped into John's shoes to fill the need for mineral research.
Joe was always respected for his work. I often found him quietly working away at the microscopes at the museum. He was always eager to share his knowledge.
Early 2008 I expressed an interest in learning optics. That spring, Joe had posted a notice about a course on optics on the curator's door. Unfortunately I saw it too late and it did not fit into my schedule. Nevertheless, after I found an unusual specimen at the April show, we talked about doing optics on it. Joe, consistent with his good nature, lent me a museum optics book and gave me his email address so we can set up a time to learn optics and analyze that specimen.
Unfortunately, that never came to pass as the specimen was stolen by a young collector. More unfortunately was the lost opportunity to get to know Joe better.
I would like to use this opportunity to thank Joe, via his family, for all his unselfish efforts, volunteer work, and contributions towards enhancing the knowledge of the Franklin and Sterling Hill minerals.

It seems like only yesterday that Joe, Ken, and I would camp in PA for a winter hunting trip. I will always remember how easy going Joe was, and how he was always there to help when needed. They say that the good die young, and this phrase surely applies to Joe. I will miss his warm smile and friendship.
Hey Joe, keep a place for me in heaven. I'll bring the cigars!

Dear Sharon and Catherine,
Although we didn't spend much time over the years with Joe, we always remember him as one of the sweetest and gentlest men we've known.
When we were living in Alexndria, VA, we stopped by to visit you all. Catherine was still a baby and our two were about 11 and 9. Jenny and Matt loved meeting baby Catherine, but what we all remember was Joe patiently sharing his mineral collection with our two children. They were entranced.
To this day whenever your family comes up in conversation, Jen and Matt bring up the minerals. In fact, I really believe that was the start of Matt's great interest in geology and hydrology. So Joe left a little bit of his legacy even with our family.
We'll miss him.

I've known Joe for only 5 or 6 years, but I've come to admire him immensely. He had a great knowledge of and passion for Franklin minerals, and his enthusiasm inspired those around him. His research into minerals was driven by great curiosity and insight. He always had a ready smile and a gentlemanly manner. And he was a man of integrity. He'll be greatly missed among his fellow mineral enthusiasts.

I knew Joe for about 30 years going back to when he assisted John Sebastian on FOMS field trips. He was a quiet guy until you got to know him. And he had a natural curiosity and intelligence about what he was doing. Joe was a real human being. One of the best. I'll miss him.
Goodbye, Joe. I'll see you on the other side. Dave

Joe was a wonderful and very smart man. My deceased husband John Cianciulli was always very happy when Joe was around, since they had a lot in common, I am glad that Joe got a chance to do the "rock" thing at the Franklin Mineral Museum. God Bless you all.

Joe was a gentleman in the true sense of the word, generous with his time and knowledge, a friend and supporter of noble causes who worked behind the scenes in his quite and unassuming way. We at the Hudson Institute are greatly saddened by his loss.
