Obituary of Alexander George McWilliams

Please share a memory of Alexander to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
In loving memory of Alexander George ("Mac") McWilliams, who passed peacefully on August 18, 2006, at his residence in Palm City, FL. Mac is survived by his wife Marie, children Kara, Jeffrey, Sheryl and Kelly, ten grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, and three generations of nieces and nephews. He is also survived by brother Donald, and pre-deceased by brothers Roger and Gordon. Born in Jersey City on November 20, 1918, Mac graduated from Caldwell High School and attended Stevens Institute in Hoboken before serving in the US Navy during WWII. Mac returned home to run McWilliams Forge Co., the family business. Begun by his grandfather in the 1800's, the forge moved from Jersey City to Rockaway in the 1930's and grew into a vital defense industry during the war. Mac served as president of the forge until his retirement in 1988. Today the company continues as a major employer in Morris County under the management of his nephews. Mac was also a co-founder and chairman of the St. Claire's Harvest Festival, and a member of the board of directors at St. Claire's Hospital for several years. He belonged to a Masonic Lodge and was a member of the Rockaway River Country Club. A talented athlete, avid golfer, terrific dancer and lover of big band jazz, Mac led an active life, though always put family and friends before all else. Probably his greatest pleasures were summers by the pool and at the Jersey shore among his extended family, three generations of whom grew up under his watchful gaze. Mac will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by all of us: family, friends, business associates, and former employees alike.
