My dearest Jo, I cry for your great loss. I am so sorry I missed the funeral but only found out today since I was in NC last week. I truly wanted to be there to support your wonderful family during this very difficult time. John and I were just discussing plans to come up from Maryland to spend some time with you and Rich and to see first hand if there was anything we could do for you since we knew that you would never ask for anything. Your strength, compassion and love reinforced by your faith in God has always been admired by my whole family. We often talked about you and Rich and looked forward to the pictures you would send to us at Christmas time with your ever-growing family. I always felt a small tinge of jealousy and maybe even some of that Catholic guilt because you seemed to have achieved what we all want in our lives...a strong, loving family unit. You have always had your priorities in the right place and you have always been making the lives of others better. You and Rich made the perfect match and were blessed by God to have found each other. I can still vividly remember the two of you dancing at your wedding and wishing that I would find a wonderful man like Rich to make my life complete. Each time I met him he embraced me with his unique ability to make a person feel special, important and loved. I know that his children and grandchildren will continue to make him proud. I know that we will all remember the many times he made us laugh and feel a little better having spent some time with him. Make no mistake and take special note that his intentions were always deliberate, selfless in his love for others and a lesson for all of us. Life can be all too short and we only get one chance to get right.
Rich, thank you for reminding me. I will miss you but will never forget you my friend.
Love always,
Your cousin, Norann

Uncle Richie,
There are so many good memories i have of you when i was growing up. And there was one that i sit & laugh about now.You use to take a piece of paper & roll it up & take electrical tape around it & you & i would go into Nana's bedroom & hit it back & forth to each other. I can still hear Nana's voice yelling at us that we better not be doing that & that we would break something. But of course we still kept playing.Thank god we didn't break anything!!!!!!!
Uncle Richie, Of course you know this but i have to say your Mass was so beautiful. I was amazed at Richie's speech & how he kept himself composed. And needless to say how beautiful your grandchildren were (GOD BLESS THEM). Phil & I will always be in touch with Aunt Jo, Michele Richie & Cathy, We love them all. In my last message i wrote i wanted to tell you to do me a big favor PLEASE GIVE LOTS OF KISSES AND HUGS TO MY DAD,MOM,NANA & POPPOP. I MISS THEM ALL THE TIME.
And now you have someone else up there with you & Please tell AUNT HELEN WE LOVE HER & WE WILL ALL MISS HER ALSO!!!!!!
LOVE YA UNCLE RICHIE & MISS YA ALREADY BIG TIME.

To Jo, Kid, Grands, and family:
Co-workers often "know" a different person than their loved ones(know). I don't think that this was the case with Richie. Richie was committed with all his heart- to you, his family; to his faith; to his beloved Yankees; and to his hobbies.
Of this there is no doubt!!!
In my world, at NJT ,Rich helped make my exile in Summit a bearable, fun place. This vibrant, conscientious little man was a giant. I am so sorry that he did not get to spend more time with you, his loves.
My world is diminished by his absense.
Yet, we bow in humble submission to the Lord's will-who knew from time immemorial that this day would come.
Warmly,
Sue Woodard

I was truly saddened to learn that my partner, Richie, had passed. I sat back and thought of all the times we had shared with the Erie Lackawanna and Conrail Police Departments. We had spent many an hour and many a day in Police Cruiser Car 263 handling cases and investigations and bringing offenders to justice. Richie was the perfect partner and a great friend. He and I had a great deal in common, such as our service to our nation in Vietnam, police work, our love and appreciation of family, and getting in on the cutting edge during the early days of computers. We also shared the joy of accomplishment and making sure that we did the very best job in our chosen law enforcement career. We were continuously praised by Captain Norman Byrne who we served under with the highest degree of professionalism and commitment. Richie could always make me laugh and raise my spirits just by being Richie. When adverse situations presented themselves, he was my backup and I was his and together we always succeeded in our quests and were blessed with still another day together on patrol. The last time I saw Richie was at his office in Summit and we talked about old times and family. We even made plans to have lunch. I missed his retirement but I had gotten him a special gift that I was never able to give him. I had thought that we would meet sometime or somewhere. I always thought that I could give my special gift to my partner "tomorrow". To the Byrne family, "Let your hearts not be troubled", because Richie is only away for now, but, through the love of Jesus Christ, Richie will live forever in our hearts. I thank God for allowing Richie to be an important part of my life, and I pray that God will continue to bless the Byrne family, the children, and all of those who Richie touched with his wisdom and fellowship during his time with us.
Rest well from your labors, partner, and a life well done.

I desperately wish I could be there to say good-bye to this very special man who I loved dearly. His humor will always be remembered, but especially, I will always remember how obvious it was that he so loved his wife, as much after 38 years as he did the day they got married. She was the light of his life and it was obvious to all who knew him. Uncle Richie, I will miss you so.

My Uncle Richie, who is also my Godfather, holds a very special place in my heart. I have such warm memories of spending weekends with him at his home when I was youg. Him trying to teach me to fish, going to church, and the infamous time, which I don't remember because I was too young but eveyone tells me about, the time he took out his teeth and handed them to me and my response was "I can't believe you just did that!" I will miss his jokes and his smile but I know he is at peace and is smiling down at us. I am sure he will try to send practical jokes from heaven. Uncle Richie please give my Nana a kiss. Until we meet again...
