Mildred R. Spencer died on May 28, 2005 at Saint Clares Hospital in Denville after a brief illness, her daughters by her side. She was 94. Her grateful and loving nature, her grace, her beauty will be missed.
She is survived by her loving daughters and sons in law Pamela and Bob Foley of Denville, Ellen Spencer and William Morris of Denville; her cherished grandchildren: Erin Dawn, Anna Dawn, Sara McMickle, Skye Foley; her precious great grandchildren: Anaika and Marina Miller, Aidan and Rainer Dawn: her dear sister Marie Needham: her best friend of ninety years Marjorie Brown. Her beloved husband of 51 years, C.Gordon Spencer died in 1989.
Born in Brooklyn, NY on October 20, 1910 to Freida (Hornung) and Walter Rugen, she graduated from Bushwick High School, attended Pratt Institute, and was a private secretary at the Ethyl Corp. in New York City. Married in 1937, she lived in Baldwin, NY before moving to Caldwell, NJ in 1946. She and Gordon retired to Point Pleasant before moving to Denville in 1988.
She was an accomplished homemaker, especially skilled in sewing, needlework, and cooking oh those incredible pies.
She appreciated natural beauty the sky, trees, flowers, birds and had a knack for finding four leaf clovers. She adored her parakeet Skippy.
While living in Caldwell from 1946 1964 she was an active member of the United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir. She was a member of the Caldwell PTA and belonged to Hookers and Crookers Sewing Group. She worked for several years as a secretary for the Town of West Caldwell. She presently belonged to the Priscilla Quilters and the United Methodist Women of Denville, who recently honored her as a Living Treasure
The family wishes to thank St. Francis Residential Community in Denville where she enjoyed living this past year.
