William A. Knapp Sr. of Denville, formerly of Montclair, NJ passed away on Sunday March 13, 2005 at Franciscan Oaks Health Care Center, Denville, NJ.
Mr. Knapp resided in Montclair from 1950 until his move to Franciscan Oaks in Denville in 1994. He was born in New Haven, Ct on January 3, 1910. He is the last surviving child of 9 brothers and sisters and was married to the late Mary A. Gorman of Lynchburg, VA for 51 years before her passing in November 1993.
He obtained a PhD in Organic chemistry from Yale University in 1935 and was a member of Sigma Chi. He worked as a chemist and consultant for the former Allied Chemical (presently Honeywell) for over 40 years beginning in September 1935. During his career he was credited for the creation of more than one patent. He was active with the Boy Scouts of America for over 25 years with Troop 12 I Montclair and the Eagle Rock council receiving the District Award of Merit in 1988 for his long and devoted service.
His hobbies included golf (once achieving that ultimate thrill of a hole in one), bowling and working with his hands be it remodeling his home, repairing and expanding the Troop cabin or constructing exhibits for the boy scouts.
Three sons survive him; William A. Knapp Jr. of Jersey City, NJ, Richard F, Knapp of Roselle Park, NJ, and John H. Knapp of Boulder, CO, two daughters in law Marge and Judy, eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Relatives and friends will be received on Wednesday March 16th from 2-4 & 7-8:45p.m. At the Norman Dean Home for Services 16 Righter Ave., Denville, NJ www.norandean.com. The funerals services will be held at 8:45p.m.Interment services will be held on Friday March 18th at 11:00a.m. At Holy Cross Cemetery, Lynchburg, VA.
