Izzo, at age 90, of Denville, Former New York City Firemen, Avid Golfer. Bowler and Outstanding Denville Volunteer Joseph Louis Izzo, 90, of Denville, died on Feb 5th, 2005 at the Compassionate Care Hospice at Saint Clare’s Hospital, Dover, NJ. He was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY and moved his wife and family to his beloved Denville in 1958. Mr. Izzo graduated from Manual Training High School and went on to further his education at Delehanty Institute and N.Y.U. before joining the New York City Fire Department in 1938. While employed as a Firefighter he also worked part time as a Furniture Mover and Plumber’s Helper, retiring after 21 years of service from Engine Company 228 in Brooklyn where he was the Motor and Pump Operator. Always wanting the best for his family, Mr. Izzo started his next career as Plant Operations Supervisor at Singer Research, Then located in Denville, When Singer moved and Morris County Vocational Technical School took over the Singer plant, Mr. Izzo remained as a Plant Operations Supervisor retiring from Vo-Tech and he obviously had a strong work ethic and thus began his last career move as Inspector with the Rockaway Valley Regional Sewerage Authority retiring at age 67 giving him time to join Peace Pipe Country Club and enjoy golfing. Mr. Izzo has always been active in his church and community activities including the Knight of Columbus Council #3359, Holy Name Society, Nocturnal Adoration Society, St. Mary’s Usher’s Society, Retreat Organizer, Denville Republican Club, volunteer for Denville Rotary Street Festival, Veteran’s of Foreign War Memorial Service, Diamond Spring Lodge as well as Denville Senior Citizen Shoot the Breeze Club and the Senior Bowling League. Mr. Izzo received numerous awards and citations for his outstanding service and volunteer activities with these organizations. Mr. Izzo is survived by his wife of 63 years, Helen Ericksen Izzo; four children, Jo-Ann Izzo Blaker of Inwood, West Virginia; Donna Costello and her husband Frank of Dover, NJ; Gregory P. Izzo and his wife Elizabeth Ann Izzo of Wharton, NJ; and Edward J. Izzo and his wife Sharon Izzo of Denville, NJ. Mr. Izzo is also survived by six grandchildren and their spouses; Bernadette Aaron, William and Cherilyn Costello, Brian and Jennifer Aaron, Christopher and Angela Izzo, Daniel Izzo and Elizabeth Izzo as well as three great grandchildren Megan Aaron, Katelyn Aaron, Aden Izzo, and fourth great-grandchild expected in April, Tyler Joseph Costello. Mr. Izzo is also survived by two grandsons through love, Matthew and Andrew Saskowitz as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Interment Denville Cemetery. Friends will be received Tuesday Feb. 8th from 7-9p.m. and Wednesday Feb. 9th from 2-4 & 7-9p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to the Denville Fire Department; 2 Indian Rd., Denville, NJ 07834 would be appreciated.
