Obituary of Carol Jane Kiernan
Carol Jane Kiernan, a loving mother, grandmother, educator, and trailblazer, passed away peacefully on November 20, 2024, at the age of 91 in the comfort of her home in Denville, NJ. She leaves behind her a legacy of intelligence, strength, and an unwavering commitment to her community. Her dedication to education was matched only by her commitment to her loving family.
Born on December 29th, 1932, in Jersey City, Carol moved to Indian Lake in Denville in 1965, where she and her late husband, Barney, raised their three children.
Carol was known for her sassy and unapologetically honest nature. With no filter and a quick wit, she could light up any room with her vibrant personality. Those who knew her loved her for her candidness, humor, and fearless approach to life. She defied the social norms of her time, particularly as a woman who pursued higher education in an era when many women did not.
Carol began her college education after having her first two children. She went on to complete her Master’s in Education at Seton Hall University and was only six credits shy of a PhD. A true pioneer, Carol showed her children and students alike that there were no limits to what could be achieved with hard work and determination.
After completing her education, Carol went on to have a 25-year career as a first grade teacher at Rockaway Township’s Dwyer Elementary School. Her classroom was a place where students flourished, as Carol always strived to instill the love of learning in her students. Her passion for learning and teaching is one of Carol’s most inspiring characteristics.
In addition to her work as an educator, Carol and her husband, Barney, co-owned and operated Kiernan’s Pub in Flanders. With its authentic family feel, due to most of Carol’s family being employed, Kiernan’s was one of the great gathering spots in the Flanders community. She loved all of her employees and patrons, many who became like family.
Carol was the ultimate multitasker—leading study groups, managing her teaching career, and raising her children, all while keeping her household running smoothly.
But above all, Carol’s greatest joy was her family. She adored her children and grandchildren, and there was nothing that brought her more happiness than being actively involved in their lives. She took immense pride in watching them grow, thrive, and succeed. Her love for them was boundless, and she was always there to offer guidance, support, and encouragement, no matter the circumstance.
We take comfort in knowing that she is at peace and reunited with Barney and her beloved daughter, Kathy. Her memory will now live on through her family; her children, Kevin (Leah) Kiernan and Kelly (Randy) Stevens and her son in law John Olenowski. Her cherished grandchildren Patrick Kiernan, Megan Olenowski, Caitlin Olenowski, Brandon (Ashley) Stevens, and Corey (Mackenzie) Stevens. Her adored great- grandchildren Savannah, Weston, Walker, Warren, Jake, and Sofiya and her extended family, all of whom will miss her deeply.
Carol’s life was a testament to the power of perseverance, intelligence, and love. Though she may no longer be with us, her spirit will live on in the hearts of her family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to know her.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, November 25th, at 1 PM at St. Mary’s Church, Denville, NJ.
