Obituary of Cora Huebner

Please share a memory of Cora to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Cora "Charly" Huebner, 90, Devoted Catholic, dedicated wife and mother. Cora was born in Lodi on July 11, 1918 to Henrietta and John Patrick McMahon. She had an older sister Eleanor, younger brother John, and younger sister Elizabeth ("Betty.") Sadly, John McMahon died when Cora was only 15. Academic excellence allowed her to graduate Garfield HS a year early (January1935) At age 17, Cora went to work to help support the family. She commuted daily from Lodi to Manhatten with her older sister Eleanor, where they both worked as secretaries. The two had become fast friends, and often double dated. Both were exceptional dancers, and Saturday nights they could be found at the Armory in Passaic, jitterbugging all night long to the live sounds of Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, and other name acts. On January 5, 1938, Cora eloped with her sweetheart, Alfred Huebner of Garfield. Though they had been highschool classmates, Cora and Al hadn't really met until their class graduation trip to Washington DC. The companionship that developed on that tour kicked off a devoted partnership that has spanned 76 years. A short time after their marriage they moved to Garfield, where she gave birth to: Allen Louis, in October 1938, Karen Marie in September 1943, James Alfred in September 1948, and Thomas John in September 1957. Throughout their time in Garfield, Cora was active in the Mother's Club of Holy Name Parish. Cora and Al scouted for a new home, and found a site near the newly built Morris Catholic High School in Denville. There they built a spacious custom home, designed by Cora with the help of an architect. In November 1961, at age 43, she gave birth to her "bonus baby", John Patrick. Her first grandchild, Robert, born 1967, had a multitude of grandparents and great grandparents, and so was unsure how to address Cora. She suggested that he call her Charly, which he did. The name stuck with all her succeeding grandchildren, and with many other close friends and family, who thereafter used it interchangeably with Cora (and Mom) She is survived by her husband, Al, 93; her children, Allen, 70, Karen, 65,Jim, 60, Tom, 51, and John, 47; her younger sister, Betty Riley(85); six grandchildren, Bob Huebner, 41, Suzanne Deane, 41, Dan Sasso, 39, Amy Huebner, 29, Brian Huebner, 25, and Elise Huebner, 20; and threegreat-grandchildren, Spencer Deane, 6, Gavin Deane, 3, and Cameron Deane, 1. Universally acknowledged for her steadiness, easy generosity and wit, deep compassion and easy-going humility, she is fondly remembered and sincerely missed by those who knew her. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Covenant House, (covenanthouse.org ) in her memory.
