Obituary of Robert E. Bernard
Robert Elliott Bernard, endearingly called “Bobby”, passed away peacefully in the comfort of Sunrise Senior Living in Mountain Lakes, NJ on Wednesday, June 3, 2026. He had shared 84 years of love, laughter, and unforgettable memories with family and friends.
Born in Queens, NY on a sunny day on July 31, 1941 to the late Florence (Schlossberg) and Murray Bernard, Bobby was one of two children to bless their household. Bobby was brilliant and kind, generous and humble; he was attentive as a son, brother, neighbor, and friend. He taught his family the true meaning of unconditional love. His sister Susan doted on him, teaching him the meaning of friendship, which they both carried with them until the end of life. He adored his parents, spending quality time, making lifelong memories. When Susan was married, Bobby embraced his new family like they were his own. He treasured spending time with Maurice “Moe” Sabean and his family, too.
After graduating from high school, Bobby went on to earn his Bachelor of Arts Degree and a Master of Science and Education from Queens College. He received his Doctorate of Education from Cornell University. Bobby started his career as a teacher before finding his calling as a day trader. He worked best for himself but he loved spending time with the right people. He cherished his family and his community. His neighbors and caregivers became family. Bobby was present and delightful when you were lucky enough to be around him. He loved his pets, especially his many cats that he loved to spoil. He will be sorely missed and forever remembered.
Although we are deeply saddened by his passing, we take comfort in knowing that he is now reunited with his loved ones: his parents, Florence and Murray; his sister and brother-in-law, Susan and Moe Sabean; his cousin, Wayne Toonkel; and the many cats he had shared his home with. He leaves only joyful memories to his cousin, Judy Toonkel Baumholtz and her husband Mark; his sister-in-law, Pricilla Sabean; and his neighbors and friends, Margot and Steve Sample. Those who loved Bobby would like to express their deepest gratitude to his dedicated care manager of the past six years, Cathleen Keating, whose high standard of professionalism and devotion added quality years to his life.
Graveside Service will take place on Friday, June 5th at 10:30 am at Cedar Park Cemetery, 735 Forest Ave, Paramus, NJ 07652.
