Obituary of Robert E. Lee

Please share a memory of Robert to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Robert E. Lee, lovingly known as “Bobby” to family and friends, passed away on May 27, 2026, at the age of 82. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, Bobby lived a life defined by kindness, intelligence, and unwavering dedication to family.

Born in Newark, New Jersey, on March 23, 1944, Bobby was a graduate of Weequahic High School and Newark College of Engineering (now NJIT), where he earned his degree in mechanical engineering in 1966. A lifelong New Jersey resident, he settled in Denville in 1975.

Bobby enjoyed a long and accomplished career as a senior civilian engineer at Picatinny Arsenal in Rockaway, New Jersey. Over 36 years of service, he made significant professional contributions and formed many lifelong friendships before retiring in 2004.

Above all else, Bobby’s greatest joy was his family. He shared 33 loving years of marriage with his beloved wife, Elaine. Together they created a life filled with family gatherings, lasting friendships, and love. An avid sports fan, Bobby especially loved cheering on his grandchildren at their baseball, football, and soccer games. He was also a devoted Yankees fan through every season. In recent years, one of his greatest pleasures was spending weekly time babysitting his great-grandson, Lucas.

Bobby will be remembered for his quiet strength and selfless devotion to his family. He leaves behind his two sons, George Somers (Jennifer), Scott Somers (Jennifer) , five grandchildren Douglas Juno (Angelina), Georgie Somers, Matthew Somers, Emily Somers, Dillon Somers, one great-grandchild Lucas, his sister Rose Leong, sister Dorothy Patch (Raymond), brother James Lee (Regina), sister Susan Lee, eleven nieces and nephews, and many dear friends and extended family members who will miss him deeply.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife Elaine and his sister Linda Lee. We take comfort in knowing they are reunited once again.

A memorial visitation for Bobby will be held on Monday, June 8, at 12 PM, with a funeral service to begin at 1 PM. All are welcome to come and celebrate the life of this incredible man!

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bobby’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or to a charity of your choice.
