Obituary of Katherine Elizabeth Covert

Please share a memory of Katherine to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Katherine Elizabeth Covert, lovingly known as Kathy, passed away peacefully on April 20, 2026, surrounded by her devoted family. She leaves behind not only those who loved her most, but also a lasting legacy of kindness, compassion, and unwavering dedication to others.

Kathy was born on December 18, 1938, in Morristown, to George and Mary Thone (née Fletcher). She was raised in Denville alongside her sister, Sister Johnice, forming deep roots in the community she would go on to serve so faithfully throughout her life. After graduating high school, Kathy pursued higher education and earned her Master’s degree, setting the foundation for a remarkable career in education.

For more than 38 years, Kathy dedicated herself to the Denville School District and Board of Education. She was far more than a consultant—she was an advocate, a mentor, and a guiding force for students who needed extra support. Specializing in learning disabilities and educational challenges, Kathy worked tirelessly to ensure that every child had access to the quality education they deserved. As a consultant, she shared her expertise with fellow educators across the district, influencing countless classrooms and shaping the futures of many young lives. Her passion, insight, and commitment left an indelible mark that will be felt for generations.

Outside of her professional life, Kathy shared a loving and enduring partnership with her husband, William C. Covert, Sr., who served for many years as a dedicated police officer in Denville. Together, they built a warm and welcoming home where they raised their three children, Bill, Terry, and Chris. Kathy’s greatest joy came from her family, and she treasured every moment spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, creating memories that will be cherished forever.

Even in retirement, Kathy’s commitment to service never slowed. She devoted herself wholeheartedly to her community, volunteering in numerous meaningful ways. She helped feed the unhoused in Dover, served on the Denville Local Assistance Board, the Municipal Alliance Committee, the Mayor’s Council for People with Challenges, and organizations such as NCPC and P.R.I.D.E. She generously gave her time to the local food pantry, supported the St. Francis Residential Community, and played a vital role in programs at St. Mary's Church, where she was a longtime and devoted member. There, she led the grandparenting program and served as a Eucharistic Minister, offering comfort and faith to many, including the residents at the The Oaks at Denville Healthcare Center.

Kathy was also an active member of the Denville Juvenile Conference Committee, the Denville Centennial Committee, and the Joey Bella Memorial Fund. She chaired events such as the St. Francis Fall Festival Tricky Tray, always bringing people together for a greater cause. To Kathy, volunteering was not just an activity—it was a way of life.

Her extraordinary dedication did not go unnoticed. In 2009, Kathy was honored as one of Denville’s Volunteers of the Year, and in 2012, she was awarded the prestigious Vivere Christus Medal by Arthur Serratelli, recognizing her profound commitment to faith and service.

Kathy Covert lived a life defined by generosity, empathy, and purpose. She uplifted those around her, championed those in need, and gave selflessly to her family and community. Her spirit will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Kathy’s legacy is now carried on by her loved ones; her children, William “Bill” Covert, Jr. (Mary), Theresa “Terry” Walker (James), Christine “Chris” Miller (Christopher), her grandchildren, Meghan Soblotne (Nate), Shannon Andes (Joe), Ryan Covert, Caitlin Covert, Erin Miller, her great grandchildren, Riley & Luke Andes, Savannah & Weston Soblotne, her sister, Sister Johnice Thone, as well as a wealth of friends and colleagues who will remember her fondly. She is now reunited with those who passed before her; her beloved husband, William C. Covert, Sr., and her son, Thomas Covert.

In the spirit of Kathy’s generosity, donations are being accepted by Denville S.P.A.R.K., an organization looking to build a lifelong home for a group of young gentlemen with developmental disabilities. Memorial donations can be made on their page by clicking this link.
