Obituary of Joe Dudek

Please share a memory of Joe to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Joseph "Joey" Dudek, 72, passed away suddenly on April 14, 2026, in Tampa, Florida. Born in Passaic, New Jersey, where he met the love of his life, Doris Dudek, Joe built a life defined by devotion to his wife of 47 years, his children, his grandchildren, and a wide circle of family and friends who knew they could always count on him. He was a longtime resident of Rockaway, New Jersey, where he spent 35 years, including many cherished years in the White Meadow Lake community.

Joe’s kind, patient, loving, and deeply engaging nature came from a brilliant mind fueled by a depthless curiosity. He had a relentless need to understand how and why everything worked, from science, math, and engineering to astronomy, history, aviation and the natural world. If there was something to learn, Joe was already three steps ahead, reading about it, studying it, and figuring out how to master it. For him, knowledge was a living thing, something that he not only pursued daily, but that he passed on to those who knew him.

He was a teacher in the truest sense, even when he wasn’t trying to be. In every circumstance, from the trivial to life’s greatest challenges, there was always a lesson, always a takeaway, always something to think about. Whether he was sharing survival skills, pointing out a star in the sky, or explaining something most wouldn’t think to question, Joe had a way of making others feel smarter just by being around him.

He was meticulous and a perfectionist. His hands were never idle, as he tinkered, fixed, and improved everything around him. One day it might be his model trains, something he enjoyed deeply. The next, he’d be onto a new challenge, like his most recent mission: trying to befriend a crow. That was Joe: curious, determined, and always a little ahead of everyone else.

Joe loved the outdoors as much as he loved learning. He was an avid fly fisherman, a hiker, an adventurer, and a true lover of nature and animals. He felt most at home outside, exploring and observing the world around him.

But nothing mattered more to Joe than his family.

He was a provider, a protector, and his two children’s biggest believer. He didn’t just support them, he truly saw them as individuals, believed in them, and made sure they believed in themselves. He was so proud of not just what his children accomplished, but of the people they became.

Joe and Doris were the loves of each other’s lives, the very best of friends who cherished doing everything together. Their bond was the kind most people can only dream of: a partnership built on trust, laughter, and an unshakeable devotion that never wavered across 47 years of marriage. They loved to travel, discovering new places and making memories at every turn. At home, summers meant long days on the deck where they loved nothing more than planning a menu together and cooking for an evening of fun for the people they loved most. And somehow, Joe always had a way of bringing Doris along on his adventures, whether that was rail fanning, train shows, or standing by his side as his spotter on a fishing trip. She always ended up loving every bit of it. He loved to say that Doris was the best spotter because she could always see all his fish and point exactly where he needed to cast his line.

With his daughter, Dani, he was the definition of a “girl dad,” and from the moment she was born, the two shared a love that was truly unmatched. He made sure she always knew she could do anything she wanted to do in this world. He passed down to her his love of science and his belief that understanding how things work is a kind of power all on its own. Nothing made him prouder than watching Dani earn her engineering degree, a moment that embodied everything he had always believed she was capable of. He instilled in her his confidence that she already had everything she needed to succeed, from her basketball journey to her career. Joe also adored Dani’s boyfriend, Eric Parker, and though Eric had only been part of the family for four and a half years, they were two peas in a pod and Joe loved him as one of his own.

He was endlessly proud of his son Doug, cheering him on through his football career, to his professional life, and, especially, to the incredible husband and father he has become. Doug and Joe were one in the same, cut from the same cloth in the best possible way. As Doug grew older and made a home of his own, the two were never happier than when they were side by side, sleeves rolled up, working on a project together. Doug shares his love of learning, becoming an educator, a legacy that meant everything to Joe. One of the greatest joys of Joe’s life was welcoming Doug’s wife, Miranda, who he adored and cherished as a daughter. The two shared a special bond over their love of plants, tending, growing and exchanging them like a language all on their own. And together, Doug and Miranda gave Joe his most treasured title: “Papa” to their two beautiful grandchildren, Mikolai Joseph and Makena Ettie, who he adored beyond words.

Before Joe built his own family, he found his footing with his sister Carol and her husband, Jerry, who opened their home to him and gave him a place to belong. He was the baby brother Carol adored, and to her children, he was simply the coolest uncle around, the kind who showed up fully, made everything more fun, and left everyone feeling a little more loved.

Joe had a way of making people feel like they belonged. He gave people nicknames, made people laugh, and showed up as a loyal friend and steady presence. He was the kind of man people trusted, respected, and genuinely enjoyed being around.

Joe’s greatest joy was his family. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Doris Dudek, his partner in everything; his children, Doug (Miranda) Dudek and Dani Dudek (Eric Parker); and his grandchildren, Mikolai Joseph and Makena Ettie, who knew him simply and lovingly as “Papa.” He adored them beyond words.

Joe was also a proud dog dad to his beloved pup, Roxie and his “Gpups” Lily, Olive, and Coco who were never far from his side and always part of the family. He is also survived by his sister Carol (Jerry); his nieces and nephews David (Nancy), Pam (Joe), Jeralyn (John), Cindy (Ben), Mark (Timarie), Carly, Keanu, Aaron, Breya, and Chloe; his Aunt Joni Dudek, who he cherished as a sister and his sister in law Anne Kasaba (Kalif); and many dear friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Sonia and Eddie Dudek, and his brothers Robert and Edward Dudek.

Joe lived a life of purpose, curiosity, and deep love. He taught, he built, he explored, and most importantly, he gave to his family, his friends, and anyone lucky enough to cross his path. His absence will be felt deeply, but his lessons, his voice, and his love will remain.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to Reef Conservation International in Belize, a cause that reflects Joe’s deep love for the country and his desire to help preserve the natural beauty he cherished so much. Of all the places he traveled, Belize was his very favorite — his happy place, where his love of adventure, nature, and discovery converged.
