Obituary of Joanne Mary Lowell
Joanne Mary Lowell, 77, of the Indian Lake section of Denville, passed away surrounded by the love of her family and friends. Born on September 3, 1948, in The Bronx, to Anne (Hinsman) and Joseph Lowell, Joanne’s life was defined by devotion—to her family, her work, and the traditions she cherished most.
Shortly after her birth, Joanne’s family moved to New Jersey, where she would spend the majority of her life in Denville’s Indian Lake community. She attended Denville schools and graduated from Morris Knolls High School. Joanne went on to build a long and dedicated career in finance, working in the finance departments at Crum & Forster and AIG until her retirement in 2015.
Although Joanne did not have children of her own, she proudly embraced the role of matriarch within her family. Her home was a haven of laughter and love, especially for her seven nieces and nephews, fourteen great-nieces and nephews, and five great-great-nieces and nephews. For decades, weekends at “Aunt Joanne’s house” were filled with adventure—endless gallivanting, exciting mystery rides, and the kind of spontaneous fun that created lifelong memories. There was never a shortage of her generosity, warmth, or time.
Joanne’s favorite season was Christmas. Her elaborate village displays were admired by all, but it was the joy of giving that truly lit her spirit. She spent months searching for the perfect gift for each loved one, often driving for hours and visiting countless stores to find exactly what she had envisioned. In the midst of decorating and shopping, she somehow found the energy to bake a thousand cookies each year, filling her home with the warmth and sweetness of the holiday.
Strong-willed and fiercely independent, Joanne faced life’s challenges with determination and resilience. Even when her health took a turn, she remained steadfast in her resolve to adapt and carry on with grace and courage.
Joanne was predeceased by her father, Joseph; her mother, Anne; and her sister, Patricia Van Buskirk. She was a devoted daughter and sister, sharing an especially close bond with her mother.
She is survived by her brothers, Jeffrey (Beverly) and Joseph (Ann); her nieces Kim Clackner and Janet Trasente; her nephews William and Robert Van Buskirk; as well as three nieces and nephews, and her many cherished great- and great-great-nieces and nephews; and her dear friends, Fran and Tony. Her legacy of love, generosity, and tradition will live on in each of them.
Memorial visitation will be held on Monday March 9, 2026, from 4:00PM to 7:00PM at Norman Dean Home for Services 16 Righter Avenue Denville, NJ 07834.
