Obituary of Salvatore "Sal" A. Intersimone

Please share a memory of Salvatore to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Salvatore Anthony Intersimone, lovingly known as “Sal,” passed away peacefully on February 14, 2026, at Pine Acres Rehabilitation Center in Madison, New Jersey. He spent 88 years of unconditional love, unwavering dedication, and unforgettable memories with family and friends.

Born on August 12, 1937, in Brooklyn, New York, Sal was raised with strong family values, deep faith, and a steadfast work ethic that would guide him throughout his life. He was the beloved son of the late Helena Letteria (Curro) and Nicola Giuseppe Intersimone. One of five children, Sal was predeceased by his siblings Maria (infant) Intersimone, Maria Intersimone, Sereno Intersimone, and Giovanina “Aunt Jenny” Intersimone. He was the last surviving sibling of his family, a true patriarch.

Sal proudly served his country in the United States Army and Army Reserves from 1956 – 1963 after attending Don Bosco Preparatory High School. Following his honorable discharge, he began a long and dedicated career with the Erie Lackawanna Railroad, a major New York and New Jersey rail line headquartered at Hoboken Terminal. After the railroad’s transition into Conrail and the evolution of New Jersey Transit commuter lines, Sal continued his service until his retirement in 2000 at the age of 62. He took great pride in his work and the role he played in keeping the region moving as a Signal Maintainer.

Sal and Sissel Garnes moved to Denville in 1961 where they raised their three sons. Sal became a constant and beloved presence in the community. He was a devoted and proud father to Anthony Intersimone and his fiancée Elizabeth Kuhn, Nickolas Intersimone and his wife Janine, and Frank Intersimone. His legacy also continues through his cherished grandchildren: Jenna Intersimone Politz and her husband Michael, Deanna Intersimone, and Mia Colette Intersimone.

Sal could always be found on the sidelines — often as the umpire behind home plate or the referee on the basketball court when his sons played sports. He volunteered as an Indian Guide and was active in Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts, leading camping trips and helping shape young lives with patience, strength, and humor. He later served as President of the Denville Senior Citizens Center, continuing his lifelong dedication to service and community.

Sal was a proud and devoted member of the Knights of Columbus Council #3359 in Denville, NJ, where he served as Past President, chaired events, and worked tirelessly to support youth activities. He was also a member of the Elks for a period of time. His Catholic faith was the foundation of his life. A dedicated member of St. Mary’s Church in Denville, Sal had a deep devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and lived his faith through quiet acts of kindness and steadfast belief.

Those who knew Sal knew exactly where they stood with him. He was honest, funny, and strong in character. He was a hard worker, a loving father and grandfather, and a man who valued integrity above all else. He had a gift for square dancing and was known for his impressive moves on the dance floor. In quieter moments, he enjoyed model trains and crafting beautiful woodworking projects.

Salvatore Anthony Intersimone leaves behind a legacy of faith, service, humor, and unconditional love. He will forever be missed, forever remembered, and forever cherished.
