Obituary of Elizabeth Wallace

Please share a memory of Elizabeth to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Elizabeth “Betty” Wallace passed away peacefully on December 29, 2025, at The Country Home in Morris Plains, New Jersey with her loving family by her side. She had shared 101 years of unconditional love, infectious laughter, and unforgettable memories with family and friends.

Betty was born on January 5, 1924, in Glasgow, Scotland, to the late Elizabeth (Young) Gray and John Gray. In 1929, at the age of five, she immigrated to the United States with her family, where they continued to grow their lives and make a new home.

A gifted soprano, Betty loved music and singing. She and her sister Agnes sang together often, from childhood through adulthood, and she remained active in church choirs throughout her life. She also loved to dance and travel—two passions she shared with her beloved husband, Andrew “Andy” Wallace. Betty and Andy were married in 1944 before he entered the Army and shared 55 wonderful years of marriage until his passing in August of 1999. Together, they traveled extensively throughout Europe and the United States and built a life filled with faith, music, and joy.

Betty was an incredible aunt with an unforgettable personality—feisty, adorable, kind, and wonderfully honest. She had no trouble letting you know exactly how she felt, whether she was enjoying herself or not, and everyone always knew where they stood with her. She was generous and thoughtful to her core, giving gifts to every family member for every holiday and making each person feel deeply loved. Though she had no children of her own, she treated all of her nieces and nephews as her children, and they lovingly considered her a second mother.

Betty was deeply devoted to her church. She worked for the Reformed Church in America in New York City for many years, organizing conventions for missionaries, and retired in 1989. Even in retirement, she remained an active and faithful member of the church, most recently at the Reformed Church of Oradell, where she continued her lifelong love of singing as a member of the choir.

One of Betty’s proudest milestones was celebrating her 100th birthday at The Country Home. A Frank Sinatra impersonator was hired to perform—a moment she thoroughly enjoyed, at least until she realized it wasn’t actually Frank Sinatra! True to form, she made her feelings known, leaving everyone with a memory that perfectly captured her spirited personality.

Betty and Andy, along with their extended family, shared a beloved summer home in the Silver Lake section of Hope Township, New Jersey—built by themselves and other family members—where countless priceless memories were made. Betty was also the cherished host of Easter celebrations, complete with an annual Easter egg hunt that became a treasured family tradition.

Betty was predeceased by her husband, Andrew “Andy” Wallace; her parents; her brother, James Kinloch Gray (2001); her nieces Marion E. Munafo, Beth J. Paterson, Helen D. Keith and Nancy E. Murphy, her nephew Robert F. Wallace, and her great-nephew Christian S. Paterson.

She is survived by her sister, Agnes Paterson, widow of the late Edward G. Paterson, of Blairstown, NJ; her nieces and nephews Keith E. (Sharman) Paterson, Dr. Ian M. (Lauren) Paterson, John A. Gray, and Georgia (Jon) Van Bennekum; and her great-nieces and great-nephews Lexie Paterson, Tori Paterson, Matt (Sarah) Murphy, Rachel (Chris Lee) Murphy-Lee, Georgia Williams, Andrew Wallace, Beth (Bob) Betz, David (Lisa) Van Bennekum, Steven Van Bennekum, Cindy Abrams, Anthony (Michele) Munafo, James F. Keith and Lee-Ann Keith and their families.

A service celebrating Betty’s life will be held at the Reformed Church of Oradell, 641 Church St., Oradell, NJ 07649 on Saturday, January 24, 2026 at 11:30 a.m. Donations in her memory may be made to the Reformed Church of Oradell. Friends and family are welcome to leave memories to be cherished at www.normandean.com.

Betty will be remembered for her faith, her voice, her honesty, and the deep love she gave so freely to her family and all who knew her.
