Obituary of Susan Marone
Susan Marone passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with cancer on Wednesday, December 10, 2025 at St. Clare’s Hospital in Denville with the love and light that she created within her family, surrounding her. She had brightened this world for 77 years before being called to Heaven.
Born as Susan to the late Clara “Peggy” (Melasippo) Haynes, she had earned many nicknames. Throughout her life, Susan was endearingly called “Susie” or “Dodo” or “Sue”. She truly broke the mold when she was born. She was beautiful inside and out, with her platinum blonde hair, striking blue-green eyes, quick wit, and exuberant personality. Susie was born in Newark, moved to Orange, and settled into West Orange, raised alongside her brothers and sister. She graduated from Clifford J. Scott High School, Class of 1963. She married Anthony N. Marone, on October 8, 1967. Soon after, they moved to Hanover and raised their three children. Throughout the years, they have moved around quite a bit, but Randolph was the place they settled the longest where she called home.
Her presence could light up any room, filling it with laughter through her stories, quick comments, and unforgettable facial expressions. Walking into her house always meant being greeted by the comforting smell of her pot roast simmering in her favorite crockpot or her delicious broccoli rabe cooking on the stove. Susie also had an incredible talent for interior decorating — every holiday, she transformed her home into a warm, welcoming space where family and friends felt embraced and excited to gather. Holidays were our favorite because of her traditions: her Thanksgiving ham that no one could ever perfect quite like she did, her homemade cheesecake, pecan sandies, and soft Italian knot cookies everyone waited for all year. She was always the life of the party, dancing to music, filling the room with joy, and making every moment feel special. She always said the song “I’ll Always Love My Mama” by The Intruders was the song dedicated to her own mom — but now, it has become our song for her too. Susie was truly one of a kind — there is no one else like her, and there never will be. These pieces of her — her warmth, her talent, her laughter, and her love — are traditions we will carry with us and honor forever.
Despite her doting nicknames, her favorite title was Mom and Ma. She excelled as a loyal wife, an attentive mother, and devoted grandma. She loved spending time with her family above all else. Especially when they were spending time together on the beach, at their shore house, or exploring the world. Susie always appreciated soaking up the sun for a good tan and to enjoy a relaxing sunset. She would never turn down a shopping trip and the day did not start until she had her coffee with cream!
Susan was profoundly loved. Please raise a glass of Bailey’s for her the next time you find yourself able to. Although we are deeply saddened by her passing, we take comfort in knowing that she is now reunited with her mother, Peggy and her mother-in-law, Antoinette Marone just to name a few.
Her legacy will live on in the hearts of her beloved husband, Anthony “Tony” Marone; her treasured daughters, Gina Marone, Lisa Marone, and Michele (Eric) Grenke; her cherished grandchildren, John Scalera, Alexa Scalera, Taylor Grenke, and Sienna Grenke; her caring siblings, John (Yvonne) Haynes and Linda (the late Nunzio) D’Onofrio; her sweetheart and faithful pup, Bailey; and many dear nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, December 18th at 1 pm at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, 15 Myers Avenue, Denville. The family is deeply grateful for the outpouring of love and support during this time. In lieu of flowers please consider a making donation by clicking here.
