Obituary of David George Varney
David George Varney passed away peacefully on Friday, November 28, 2025, after a long illness. He leaves behind his loving wife, Ruth, and many family members including nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews.
Born in Boston, David grew up in Watertown, Massachusetts. His summers were spent in Sunapee, New Hampshire, where he swam and waterskied.
An engineering graduate of Northeastern University, it was a job offer in structural engineering that brought him to New Jersey where he designed several bridges. Dave and Ruth were introduced through friends who thought they’d be a good match, and thirty-five years later they were proven right.
A man of many interests, Dave earned a black belt in martial arts. He loved music of all genres, from classical to contemporary to jazz. For several years, he took a hiatus from engineering to sell high end stereo systems in a time before the big box stores and international wholesalers. An expert skier, Dave skied the challenging trails of the White Mountains in New Hampshire, and thought the Jersey slopes were for beginners.
Dave, a quiet and stoic man, bravely faced his Parkinson’s illness and its many complications. On his behalf, Ruth would like to thank the many friends and neighbors at Greenbriar at Fox Ridge Building One for their support. Also the Rockaway Township Police Force, the EMTs of St. Clare’s hospital, the staff and caregivers at Garden State Elder Care, and the nurses and aides of Hospice Care via the Visiting Nurse Association of Northern New Jersey.
A memorial will be held at a later date.
