My tribute to Mom from her funeral service. We miss you, Mom.
__________________________________________________________________________________
Thank you for joining us to celebrate Mom’s life. A lot of you have been on this journey with us for a long time. We’re grateful for your support and understanding. Gary, thank you for your patience and for waiting for me. I love you. Here I come!
“But blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in him.”
I consider myself blessed to have countless angels placed in my path who helped us along the way. It’s been a difficult journey, but the road was paved with many blessings which include:
• 5 years with Mom that we wouldn’t have had otherwise. It gave us time to enjoy each other’s company, even if it was between sundowner’s episodes. She was a stage five runner and could pack a wallop if she landed a punch!
• We were also blessed with learning we’re capable of doing difficult things often under pressure. The meds! OMG
• Another blessing was the privilege of being caretakers to the person who gave us life.
• Also, helping Mom transition at the end of her life and never being alone in this isolating sickness.
• And finally, the blessing of laughter despite the tears – Fun fact: Dad often got credit for being the funny one in our family, but really, Mom had an awesome sense of humor.
It’s no secret if Mom and I had a Facebook relationship status it would be, “It’s Complicated.” Often she’d quip I was just like her. It always amazed me she meant it as an insult, not a compliment.
How did she not see that being like her was not a detriment?
This was a woman who was fiercely independent – Okay, FULL DISCLOSURE she fractured her back sneaking into the garage and dragging recycling cans to the curb so we couldn’t do it, but she did do it ALL by herself! Never mind it was the wrong day.
She had inner strength that can only come from a person who’s been traumatized and hurt often in life but continued to fight until her last breath. And that’s exactly what she did.
Mom was very smart, intuitive, and quick witted. She was the comeback queen. Just last week as she was getting weaker, she was joking with us and I said to her, “Ah, funny girl” and she immediately responded, “You’re a funny girl, too!” Never missed a beat.
As she was drifting away from us, she’d still smile and laugh. We even had moments when she’d shimmy her shoulders and sing. She was still super sassy and sooo bad assy.
She raised us to have morals and integrity. If you couldn’t look yourself in the eye in your mirror, then you shouldn’t be doing it – whatever “It” was.
She was generous to a fault and would give you anything she had if you needed it. Unfortunately, some of what she’d try to give you was more Dollar Tree, than Gucci.
As her dementia got worse it became harder to keep her occupied and entertained. That’s when our sense of humor came in handy. There was nothing I wouldn’t try to shift her mood or attention. Beatboxing, twerking, singing Broadway commercials very badly, yodeling, and just dancing around. We’d laugh and she’d tell me, “You’re crazy!” She was resilient. Even when it was getting worse, she loved to have fun.
And finally – Mom was beautiful, yet humble. She was always put together, had her earrings on and lipstick just so. Even if it was only to go to the grocery store.
So, go ahead and tell me I’m like my mother. She was a fighter for as long as her body could endure it and right up to her last goodbye. She was a warrior.
Mom, thank you for being the backbone of our family. You can rest now; we’ll take it from here.
Love you.

Terri and Pam, my favorite memory of your Mom is dancing with her at the Patio Bar in Point Pleasant when Gary's band was playing. Barbara was a crowd favorite with her cool moves and she enjoyed herself so much. I know her passing is sad and painful for you, but I know in time you will find moments when a memory will suddenly come up and you will smile. Wishing you all peace.
with love,
Rose Ann Hastings
