Obituary of Joseph Toth
Denville - Joseph Toth Jr., 91 years young, passed away peacefully, soaking up the afternoon sun on his balcony, Sept. 19, 2025. Affectionately known as Poppa by his adoring family, we have been truly blessed to have had him in our lives. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
Joe was born in Passaic, NJ on Aug. 11, 1934 to Joseph and Anna (Malick) Toth and grew up in the Lakeview section of Clifton with his sister Doris Binko (deceased), brother Dennis Toth, and many aunts, uncles, cousins and life-long friends. It was also there that he met the love of his life, his sweetheart, Charlotte (Nibbling), when he was 18 and she just 14. They married Sept. 29, 1956 – only 19 days after her 18th birthday – and had 51 loving years together before she predeceased him in the spring of 2008.
Joe and Charlotte raised their 3 children, Cindy (Mike) Scrivani of Indian Land, SC, Joe (Tammy) of Port Leyden, NY and Jeff (Shannon) of Lenior City, TN, in Parsippany. Joe’s love of boating and the water led him to build their dream house on Lake Hopatcong in 1984 and purchase a second home on the beach in Surfside Beach, SC in 1994. He enjoyed waterfront living in NJ and SC until 2016 when mobility issues caused him to move to The Oaks in Denville. He was fortunate to live there independently, sharing his great smile, humor, and easy-going nature with his many new-found friends, until his passing.
The joy of his life were his grandchildren, Garrett (Haley) Scrivani of Concord, NC and Austin Scrivani of Branchville, NJ. He was so very proud of them and their life successes. He especially enjoyed following their sports careers, cheering them on at all of their wrestling matches, football and baseball games. They adored him and will miss him terribly but will treasure forever the fond memories of wonderful times together, especially at the lake and beach, and the profound effect he had on their lives. Over the past 4 years he has cherished his visits with his loving great grandchildren, Everly Rayne, Braxton Levi and Archer Joseph Scrivani.
Joe enjoyed a full, happy and productive life. After retiring at 55 from a 30-year career with Western Electric, he started his own electrical contracting business. A man of remarkable skill, he could fix or build just about anything. He loved cars and owned many over the years. None of his cars ever went to a garage for service – he was an ace mechanic.
Above all, Joe will be remembered for his unwavering love of family, his devotion to the Lord and his church, and his strong work ethic. His legacy of strength, selflessness, and faith will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be deeply missed.
