Obituary of James F. Van Duyne, Sr.
James F. Van Duyne, Sr., 93, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, in the comfort of his Denville home in Indian Lake, surrounded by his devoted family. Born on September 9, 1931, in Brooklyn, NY, to Antoinette and Frederick Van Duyne, James was an only child who filled their home with joy. His life was a testament to unconditional love, infectious laughter, boundless wisdom, and unforgettable memories that will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
A proud veteran, James served honorably in the United States Navy during the Korean War. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to Brooklyn, where he wed his beloved Eileen Meister on July 9, 1955. Together, they wove a rich tapestry of love and family, raising their children in Brooklyn before making their permanent home in the serene Indian Lake section of Denville in 1990. This cherished place had been a part of his life since childhood summers in the 1940s, a testament to the deep roots and joyful memories they shared. James followed in his father’s footsteps, dedicating 50 years to the International Union of Operating Engineers Local #14 as a skilled crane operator, retiring in 1994. A master of his craft, he took pride in bringing his sons into the trade, continuing a legacy of three generations of operating engineers. His work ethic ensured his children wanted for nothing, even as he worked tirelessly while they enjoyed summer vacations at Indian Lake.
James was a man of many passions and talents. In Brooklyn, he was a skilled marksman and faithful member of the Brooklyn Gun Club. In Denville, he earned the affectionate titles of Bar Chairman and Boat Master at Indian Lake and was a proud member of the Denville American Legion Post #390. Alongside his beloved wife, Eileen, he was a member of the Peace Pipe Country Club until her passing in 2018. Above all, James’ family was his greatest pride and joy. Known for his generosity, honesty, encouragement, and reliability, he was a true patriarch whose legacy will endure for generations.
James now rests in eternal peace, reunited in Heaven with his beloved wife, Eileen; his parents, Antoinette and Frederick; and his cherished granddaughter, Jessica Spiteri. He leaves behind a legacy of love and joyful memories to his children, James F. Van Duyne, Jr. and his wife Michelle of Long Island, NY, Susanne Van Duyne of Denville, and Chris Van Duyne and his wife Stacey of Rockaway; his adored grandchildren, Crystal Van Duyne and Nicole Ervolino and her husband Jimmy, Joseph, Michael, Tyler, and Kylie Kid; his treasured great-grandchildren, Brandi Antonucci and her husband Sam, Damian, Chris, Josephine, and Victoria; and many dear extended family members and friends.
