Obituary of Franco Joseph Brita
Franco “Frank” Joseph Brita, 81, of Dover, NJ passed away peacefully at his home on August 18, 2025.
Born in Benevento, Italy, Franco was the beloved son of the late Mario and Amelia D’iasio Brita. He immigrated to the United States as a child and lived in Summit, New Jersey before moving to Morristown and eventually settling in Dover.
Frank was a pioneer in bringing Karate and martial arts to the United States. Among the first professional martial arts instructors in the country, he played a vital role in promoting the
discipline and expanding its reach. Frank obtained the rank of Hanshi 8th degree, 6th degree and 4th degree black belt. He instructed at several universities, high schools, and private schools and owned and operated several commercial Karate schools. Frank was one of the original members of The Society of Black Belts of America. He was inducted into the World Karate Union Hall of Fame, Unified Martial Arts Hall of Fame and the Philadelphia Historic Martial Arts Society Hall of Fame.
In addition to his impact in martial arts, Frank was a successful entrepreneur. He was a principal in Brita Foods, Inc., a food distribution company still in operation today.
Frank was a history buff who also loved movies. A natural salesman, he had a gift for connecting with people. He was easygoing, non-judgmental, and deeply understanding. Frank was always happy to see you; he radiated warmth and kindness.
Despite his many accomplishments, Frank remained humble, practical, and approachable. He treated everyone with respect, regardless of their background. He was generous almost to a fault, always ready with a helping hand or a word of encouragement.
An expert cook, Frank especially enjoyed preparing Italian cuisine and sharing meals with others.
Franco was predeceased by his parents, Mario and Amelia, and his brother, Bruno. He is survived by his brother Joseph (Beata) Brita, of Morris Plains; his nieces, Julie (Steve) Smithers, Alessandra (Frank) Yanofsky and Diana Stawarz; and his nephews Joseph Brita, Nicholas Brita and Vincent Brita.
Franco’s legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched with his spirit, generosity, and unwavering kindness. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
