I never worked with Coach but I was on the opposite sideline a bunch of times. Off the field Coach was gracious in victory and defeat. He would always share a smile and a story. On the field? He sure was tough to beat!

No matter where life has taken me, the lessons and values coach taught have been just as important on the field as they were off the field. Attitude, attention to details, pride, intensity, punctuality, and family first were hallmark characteristics of a player under coach's guidance. Never let a shattered knee get in the way of completing the mission.
I was deeply saddened to hear of Gerry's passing and dismayed I was not able to get back home to show my gratitude and condolences to you all in person. All of my families love, thoughts, and prayers are with you all during this very difficult moment in time.
Please know that a part of coach will live on into eternity as the same values he instilled in me are the same values I have passed on to the players I have coached, the soldiers I lead, my own children, and that I continue to use every day.

Gerry was truly an excellent football coach but an even greater man in every way. I had the pleasure of working for the Morristown Daily Record and covering Morris Catholic football in the late 1970s and in the 1980s. Gerry was always very kind, thoughtful and sincere and knew the game of football inside-and-out. He will be missed by all who had the good fortune of knowing or meeting him. I was very fortunate to have been able to play football with Gerry at WPU when we met over 55 years ago. Gerry not only became a great friend, he was also a great coach and an overall great person and family man.

Always a very early riser, not a Christmas morning went by when my brother-in-law didn’t send a 5:00a.m. text/ video , dressed in a Santa hat and a light-up nose while he wished me a Merry Christmas in his elf voice! I worked with Gerry for many years during my time in the Athletic Department at Montville Township High School. He was the best of the best. I saw, first hand, what a different he made in the lives of so many, both students and staff. He always saw good in everyone and reached out without hesitation. Gerry Gallagher, whom we love so dearly, will always be with us! Gerry is now our guardian angel in the fields of life. Gerry’s dedication and direction in his amazing life has set a fire in countless souls, inspired many to do our best to reach our goals and gave much knowledge and taught lessons that will be remembered long after the game was won! Gerry Gallagher, coached with much wisdom, led with his heart and lived with honor.
One of New Jersey’s finest members of the coaching fraternity and devoted family man, the journey between me and Gerry began in earnest when he was at Montville High School. Our discussions were more than X’s and O’s. He mentored me on how to instill discipline with respect, resilience through strength and teamwork by fellowship.
Once within Coach Gallagher’s presents, one can perceive it immediately, a sort of magnetic effect of personality. I am extremely proud to call Coach Gallagher a friend. Being my contemporary, Gerry and I built a strong bond based on mutual admiration, trust and shared experiences. I will miss my good friend Gerry, who brought a great light to us all, that the fire he instills in me will burn brightly in his memory.
I was honored that Gerry would invite me year after year to the Wednesday Evening Winter-Spring Special Teams Clinic on Zoom. More important was that once the coaches left, we would stay on to talk about football and life. The only reason some nights that we would cut the chat short was if Bryan had Kellen on to say good night to grandpa. I was so pleased that the AFCA Honored Gerry and his family in 2024 with their prestigious High School Power of Influence Award. Being on the AFCA committee, I was extremely happy that I was present to celebrate Gerry’s leadership recognition for making others better because of his presence.
To Pat, Bryan, Lauren, Amy, Caleigh, and Kellen: Please accept my condolences for your loss. Thank you for sharing Gerry with us. He will be remembered.
To Coach Gerry Gallagher whose greatest victories were in the hearts of his family, players, fellow coaches and administrators and friends - As you look down from Heaven onto all the fields you ever set foot upon, I hope you smile at the lives you have touched and the legacy you have left. May God place his hand on your shoulder and say, “Well done”.

My three children went through Montville HS where he was the football coach. He was and has always stood out as an honorable man who made sure his players became honorable people as well. A ver rare quality. He will be dearly missed. My sincere condolences to his family. He will never be forgotten.

Gerry and I first met as coaching opponents, he at William Paterson and me at Jersey City State in 1991. I very quickly realized that he was an exemplary coach and his teams always exhibited tremendous execution, discipline, and sportsman. Through football we became good friends and I was thrilled in 2013 when Gerry agreed to coach with me at Parsippany High School. In that year everyone he touched was better, especially me! He seemed to be everywhere with a hand in everything including making the hilight tape for the team dinner!
Last year I had a health scare and as soon as Gerry heard he reached out to me. Last week my town experienced tremendous flooding and he checked up to make sure we were ok! He was simply the best in every important category on God's green earth! My sincerest condolences go out to Pat, Bryan, and the rest of Gerry's cherished family.

The world has lost a most wonderful human being.
My introduction to Gerry Gallagher was on a spring afternoon during his interview for the head coach football position at Montville Township High School. As president of the Montville Mustang Association I was asked to sit in during the interview process to bring a different perspective. Needless to say, once Gerry walked into the room I was certain we had found the man for the job. He was one of the most upbeat men I ever met. His resume was a testament to his dedication to his love for the game of football however what it didn’t capture was his humility.
Gerry cared so deeply about our boys becoming good men on and off the field. Under Gerry’s guidance our football program blossomed into one that made Montville Township proud. Beyond that he brought the high school community of cheerleaders, band and all sports together. Gerry always wanted to make the world better.
After a two year campaign to light our football field on October 2, 1998 a long time dream came true- our kids had a place to go on Friday nights! Coach Gallagher and his mighty Mustangs brought home a win. The sense of community is something we still enjoy today and will continue for many years to come.
Most recently during our last conversation we didn’t talk football - we spoke about our children and more importantly grandchildren. Oh how he loved his grandson Kellen.
To Gerry’s beloved Pat, his cherished children Bryan, Lauren, Amy, Caleigh and grandson Kellen I wish I had the words to comfort you in your profound loss- please know my prayers are with you. Thank you for sharing Gerry with all of us. He will forever be remembered. Rest in peace God’s good and faithful servant you have earned your heavenly reward.
