Don and I met in the early '70's at one of the All North Jersey ( Region 1 ) Band Festivals, as we each qualified for and played in the trumpet section. We became fast friends in and outside the music world till his untimely passing. Smart, generous , and thinking outside the box were all Don traits. His humor was also laced throughout. If we hadn't been in touch for a while, but then I received a call with the voice saying.... " I'm calling from The Department of Redundancy Department ... " I knew exactly who was calling. I will miss him.

Don was a wonderful person and a real friend. Going back as far as second grade, Don, Billy Kiloh and I were photographed for perfect attendance that year for the newspaper. I wish I still had that picture. In 5th grade, Don made an anemometer for his science project in Mrs. Caggiano's class. When we reconnected years after high school, he was so pleased I remembered that. It actually worked! Since both our last names start with 'D," we had 5 years of homeroom together also. At school band concerts, it was clear how talented he was. We had several classes together in high school. Many years later, about 1995, one day while he was out at lunch in Newark about a block from PSE & G, I was working a block in the other direction, I crossed the street at a 90 degree angle and we literally bumped into each other on the sidewalk! After that, we would go out to dinner sometimes to chat and reminisce about the wonderful childhood we had. I remember he would bring his laptop sometimes and show me amazing fruit and vegetables he was growing in South America. Don explained I had never seen those kinds of fruit and vegetables in our supermarkets because they wouldn't survive the long trip in edible condition. He was modest and while he mentioned helping some children there, he did not tell me how much he was doing. His smile, his sense of humor, explaining the connection between math and music, his good will toward everyone, and his kindness are things I will always remember. He was so well-loved and will be missed by me and by many. Evelyn Donegan

Don was a longtime music buddy and friend. We still played together long after high school, him on piano and me on horn. We kept in touch online; but I didn't know till now, October, that he had passed. He was a kind and good guy, with a lovely goofy side. That kind of kindness leaves an indelible mark, and I'm sure that mark touched everyone he came across. I'm so sorry to hear of his passing. He was talented and smart, but never used that in any way except to to create beauty and to express interest and curiosity in the world around him. Rest in peace, old friend.

Don and I were classmates from Kindergarten to senior year in high school. We started taking piano lessons from the same teacher and played together with other kids on the street.
In high school, we played in the band together. He was such a good trumpet player.
I last saw him at a garage sale at my parent's house in 2012. He still had a warm smile and spoke fondly of my parents. Such a nice guy! RIP Don.

As a friend of Don’s from Kindergarten thru HS, I will always remember his humor and sweetness and his love of music. I was fortunate to have reconnected with him a few years ago and spend an afternoon walking around the lake catching up. How lucky were all who crossed paths with him!! Godspeed dear friend…
