Obituary of Samuel E Hon, Jr.
Samuel E. Hon, Jr. passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 14, 2025, at the age of 87. A devoted husband to Peggy, proud father, loving grandfather and great-grandfather, and loyal friend to many, Sam’s life was defined by his unwavering commitment to family, service, and community.
Born on October 30, 1937, in the Mt. Hope section of the Rockaway community, Sam carried the spirit of “Mt. Hope against the world” throughout his life. This sense of resilience, loyalty, and unity became the foundation for everything he did.
After earning a Master’s Degree in Business Administration, Sam embarked on a distinguished career in public service. He became Finance Director for Rockaway Township in 1968, later serving as Assistant School Business Administrator for Morris Hills Regional District and School Board Administrator for West Morris Regional Board of Education until his retirement in 1995. Even in retirement, Sam continued to serve on the Board of Directors for Green Pond Corporation from 2001 to 2007.
Sam’s greatest pride and joy, however, was his family. With his devoted wife Peggy of nearly 47 years; he raised five children, Heidi (Kevin) Nienhouse, Sam (Lynne) Hon, Denise (Jim) Yodice, Michael (Donna) Hon, Thomas (Erin) Groel always present and involved, never missing a beat. Whether offering wise advice, coaching them in sports, or simply being a steady presence in their lives, Sam was the unwavering rock his family could always count on. His children, grandchildren Chris, Ryan (Kelly), Alyssa, Pamela, Michael, Kevin, Brock, T.J. , David, and Paul and great-grandchild Theodore will forever cherish the love and wisdom he shared with them. All though we are saddened by his loss we take comfort in knowing he is now reunited in heaven with his grandson William Joseph.
In addition to his devotion to family, Sam was a man of action. He built two homes throughout his life a testament to his hard work, self-sufficiency, and determination. While he certainly had help along the way, it was Sam’s tireless effort that truly brought his vision to life.
A gifted athlete, Sam excelled in baseball and football during his younger years, and his love for the outdoors extended into many cherished hunting trips with his son Michael. These trips were more than just hunting they were opportunities to bond, create lasting memories, and pass on traditions.
Sam also dedicated many years as a volunteer firefighter with the Rockaway Township Fire Department, specifically with Marcella Company #3. His commitment to his community was clear in every aspect of his life.
One of Sam’s favorite quotes, which his family will forever cherish, was his guiding principle: “Know thyself and be thyself.” These words reflect the core of who Sam was; a man who stayed true to his values, his family, and his community.
Sam’s legacy is one of love, strength, and authenticity. His wisdom, his devotion to family, and his quiet strength will continue to inspire those who knew him.
All services for Sam will be held at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church at 508 Green Pond Road, Rockaway, NJ, on Saturday, August 30th, 2025. Visitation will take place there at 10:30AM and a Memorial Service will follow at 12:00PM.
