Obituary of Marshall E. Collins

Please share a memory of Marshall to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Marshall E. Collins, 79, of Mountain Lakes, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on June 1, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and unwavering devotion to family and friends.

Born on August 30, 1945, in the Bronx to Edward and Helen Collins, Marshall was the eldest of four brothers. He was raised with strong values, a sharp mind, and a drive that would guide him through a life well lived. After attending The Bronx High School of Science and then Manhattan College of Engineering, earning a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Marshall took to the skies, building a distinguished career as a commercial pilot. He began flying with Eastern Airlines and later joined USAir—now known as American Airlines—where he spent over three decades doing what he loved: traveling the world and mastering the skies.

Fate intervened one evening on a double date, where Marshall met the love of his life, Dorothy. From that moment, it was clear their story was just beginning. The two were married in 1975 and soon moved from the hustle and bustle of Manhattan to the tranquility of Mountain Lakes. There, they built a beautiful life together and became cherished members of St. Catherine of Siena Church.

While Marshall never stopped working hard, he also knew how to enjoy life. A true craftsman, he loved fixing things and could often be found in his garage, surrounded by tools, laughter, and the hum of creativity. His passion for cars led him to restore a 1971 blue Corvette—a project that turned into one of his greatest joys. Whether he was cruising through town or simply polishing the hood, that Corvette was more than a car—it was a reflection of his dedication, skill, and zest for life.

Marshall was more than a devoted husband and skilled pilot—he was a loyal friend, a magnetic presence, and a man whose wit and warmth touched everyone he met. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know him.

Marshall now joins his parents, Helen and Edward Collins, and his beloved brother, Gavin Collins, in eternal rest. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Collins; his brothers, Dr. Kenneth Collins and Paul Collins; and many dear lifelong friends, who held a special place in Marshall’s heart.

The Collins family extends heartfelt gratitude to the Cardiac Rehab Unit at St. Clare’s Hospital in Denville and Morristown Memorial Hospital in Morristown for their exceptional care, compassion, and support during Marshall’s final days.

A Funeral Mass at St. Catherine of Siena Church will be announced at a later date, but please take the time to use this page to send a condolence, share a memory, or light a candle to allow Marshall’s light to keep shining! If you would prefer, you can make a donation in Marshall’s memory by way of www.inmemof.org to ensure receipt of your donation to support St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
