Obituary of Diane M. Eckert

Please share a memory of Diane to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Diane Eckert, a devoted mother, treasured grandmother, passionate educator, and beloved community member, passed away peacefully on May 31, 2025, at Merry Heart of Succasunna.

Born on June 3, 1934, in Cleveland, Ohio, Diane was the daughter of Thomas and Marie Eckert. She grew up in Cleveland, where the foundation of her lifelong love of learning was first laid. In her adult years, Diane moved to New Jersey, where she raised her family.

A loving mother to three sons, Diane gave her heart fully to her family. She earned her master’s degree in education and worked as an office manager in commercial real estate for many years, a role she embraced with the same diligence and care she brought to every part of her life. In retirement, she was an adjunct instructor of English as a Second Language for the County College of Morris corporate education division. Through this work, Diane empowered countless students with the tools to succeed, always offering patience and encouragement.

Her work ethic and resilience were hallmarks of her character.

Beyond her professional life, Diane found great joy in books, gardening, and giving back to her community. For over 18 years, she managed the library at the Cooks Pond Senior Housing community, sharing her love of reading with neighbors and friends. She nurtured both minds and gardens, tending to Cooks Pond greenery and contributing her time and talent as the recording secretary and historian of the Rockaway Valley Garden Club.

In her free time, Diane could be found playing bridge with friends, attending classes at the Lakeland Hills YMCA, laughing and reminiscing with her friends, and delighting in stories about her beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her sons Greg Dokus (Ann) of Fairport, NY, Dan Dokus (Lynee) of Denville, NJ, Steve Dokus of Linclon, VT and stepsister Nancy Schmitt of Parma, OH.  She is also survived by grandchildren Katie West (Matt), Tess Mogk (Dylan), Mike Dokus and Gabe Dokus, as well as great-grandchildren Callum and Serena. She was predeceased by her brother, Dr. Richard Eckert of Seven Hills, OH.

Diane lived a life full of purpose, kindness, and quiet impact. She will be missed dearly by her family, friends, neighbors, students, and all those fortunate enough to have known her.
