Obituary of Russell C. Baccaglini

Please share a memory of Russell to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Russell C. Baccaglini, 84, of Morris Plains, NJ, passed away peacefully at home on May 19, 2025, surrounded by the love and warmth of his family after a courageous battle with dementia. He was the cherished husband of Arlene for 63 years, and a devoted father, grandfather, and friend to many. Russell's life was defined by his unwavering devotion to his faith, family, and career, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew him.

Born in the Bronx on August 29, 1940, to Ruth Muetze and John Baccaglini, Russell was the only child in a family that valued education and hard work. His family moved to Bergenfield, NJ, when he was nine, where he would meet his future wife, Arlene, at the age of 13. Their love story began in the halls of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, where they grew up together—both as classmates and as partners in faith, teaching Sunday School.  They also marched together in the high school marching band, including performing in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on more than one occasion. Their love and partnership would last a lifetime.

Russell's academic journey was nothing short of impressive. He graduated as valedictorian from Bergenfield High School in 1958 and attended Columbia University on a scholarship from his father’s union the IBEW.  He went on to earn multiple degrees from Columbia, including a Bachelor of Arts, a Bachelor of Science, and Master’s degrees in Science and Engineering. His education laid the foundation for a brilliant career in engineering and beyond.

In his professional life, Russell was a man of extraordinary intellect and achievement. He began his career in engineering, working for various companies including Uniroyal, Apollo Chemical Co. and as President of Multi-Arc Scientific Coatings. His career would take him to Minnesota, but his love for New Jersey led him to convince his company to relocate the headquarters back to NJ.  After Multi-Arc he had a successful career, as a financial advisor with Thrivent eventually transitioning his practice to his sons Russell and Mark.

Russell’s devotion to his family and serving others was his greatest legacy. He and Arlene built their forever home in Morris Plains, where they raised four children and instilled in them the values of love, integrity, and hard work. His commitment to his children was unwavering—he was always there, not just as a father, but as a mentor and friend.

Russell’s love for his family extended to his grandchildren, and he was known for always having toys or prizes ready for the little ones. He cherished every moment with them, sharing his passion for the outdoors through activities like boating, scuba diving, and camping. Annual family trips to Lake George became cherished traditions, and wonderful memories were also made on summer vacations to Wildwood Crest, as well as to Hawaii and Alaska.

A man of deep faith, Russell was an active member of both Trinity Lutheran Church in Morris Plains, NJ and Somerset Hills Lutheran Church in Basking Ridge, NJ. He was not only a dedicated volunteer but also an evangelist, sharing his faith and love for the Lord with others.

His ongoing involvement with Columbia University’s Engineering Alumni Association and his Columbia fraternity were also significant parts of his life. He remained active in both organizations for many years, including serving a term as President of the Engineering Alumni Association.

Russell is survived by his loving wife, Arlene; children, Russell (Jola), Lisa (Scott Schneier), Mark (Julie), and Paul (Tara); grandchildren, Anna (fiancé Jim), Emily, Paul, Abigail, Zachary, Max, and Holly; as well as his siblings-in-law, Carolyn Shaughnessy (the late Michael) and Reverend Kenneth F. Spence (Joan). He was predeceased by his parents and beloved Uncle Russell.
