Obituary of Edward Joseph Power Jr.
Edward J. Power Jr., of Rockaway Township, NJ, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, at the New Jersey Firemen’s Home in Boonton, NJ. He was 79 years old.
Born in Newark, NJ, Ed was the third of eight children born to Edward J. Sr. and Dorothy B. (Lichtel) Power. He moved to Rockaway Township in 1973, where he spent over five decades building a life rooted in family, service, and community.
Ed proudly served in the United States Army in the mid 1960's during the Vietnam War. He worked as a dedicated mechanic with Public Service Electric and Gas (PSE&G) for 40 years, retiring in 2008. A proud member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, he was known for his work ethic, skill, and camaraderie. In 1974, he joined the Hibernia Fire and Rescue Company, where he served faithfully for 48 years. His passion for fire safety extended beyond emergency response—he especially enjoyed teaching fire prevention to children's groups throughout the area.
In his spare time, Ed loved riding his motorcycle, hunting, and fishing. Above all, he cherished time spent with his family.
Ed was predeceased by his sister Dorothy E. Power and his brother William A. Power.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Diane E. (Otterbein) Power of Rockaway Township; his devoted sons Keith Power, and Adam Power and his wife Tracy, all of Rockaway; and his treasured grandchildren Isabella, Makayla, Nathan, and Kelsey. He is also survived by his siblings Mary A. and her husband Richard Shields of Florida, Antoinette M. and her husband Peter Salvesen of Florida, Bernadette F. Power of Toms River, NJ, Damien J. and his wife Marian Power of Springfield, NJ, and Jane F. Power of Toms River, NJ.
Family and friends are invited to visit on Friday, April 25, 2025, from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Norman Dean Home for Services, 16 Righter Avenue, Denville, NJ 07834. www.normandean.com. A Fireman’s Service will be held at 6:00 PM. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, April 26, at 10:00 AM at St. Mary’s Church, 15 Myers Avenue, Denville, NJ 07834.
In lieu of flowers, and due to a family medical allergy, the family kindly requests that memorial donations be made in Ed’s memory to either Breakthrough T1D (formerly JDRF) or the Hibernia Fire Company by way of www.inmemof.com.
