Obituary of Philip Yu Kung

Please share a memory of Philip to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Philip Yu Kung, who passed away on February 3, 2025, in Morristown, NJ, at the age of 78. Philip was a devoted husband, father, and friend, whose kindness and dedication will be remembered by all who knew him.

Born on January 15, 1947, in Shanghai, China, Philip emigrated to Taiwan and in 1976, while he was a customer at a bank, met May, a young bank teller. Their connection was immediate, and in the following year, they were married. Their love story began with a chance encounter but soon blossomed into a lifelong partnership.

Educated as an engineer, Philip moved to the United States in 1977 for work, and in 1978, he and May bought their home in Rockaway, NJ. There, they would start their family and spend the next 47 years of their lives. Philip worked hard to provide for his family, while always making time to pursue his passions and hobbies. In his children, he instilled the virtues of hard work and perseverance and took immense pride in his family’s accomplishments.

Philip had a love of history, especially in military history. In his downtime, Philip enjoyed watching military documentaries and movies, Chinese soap operas, as well as keeping up with current events. He had a love of tea, and his daily ritual of drinking tea while reflecting on the world was a calming part of his routine.

Together with May, Philip loved to travel, and they shared many unforgettable experiences on cruises to Japan, Thailand, Denmark, Australia, and New Zealand. These trips not only allowed them to explore new places but also introduced them to new lifelong friends.

Philip is survived by his loving wife of nearly 50 years, May, his children Leslie (Andy) and Christopher (Melanie), his grandchildren Isabelle and Zachary. He is also survived by several loving siblings, a host of nieces and nephews, and cousins.

A celebration of Philip's life will be held on Sunday, February 23rd from 10:00AM-12:00PM at Norman Dean Home for Services, 16 Righter Ave, Denville NJ 07834 with a repast to follow.

Philip touched the lives of many and his memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
