Obituary of George E. Hayward

Please share a memory of George to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

George E. Hayward passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday, January 19, 2018 at Compassionate Care Hospice in Dover. He was 79 years young.

Born in Morristown to the late George and Evelyn Hayward, he was one of 3 children. George was a very smart and dedicated worker. He graduated from Morristown High School in 1956 and received his Undergraduate Degree from Drew University in 1960, where he was inducted into the Athletics Hall of Fame for both baseball and basketball. He later graduated from Washington University in St. Louis with his Master’s Degree in Science. Along with being a great baseball and basketball player, George was also very good at tennis and golf. He had many passions, including fishing, especially at Lake Luzerne, where he loved to spend his summers.

George loved to talk. This is why he was excellent at his 35-year career as the Development Director and Director of Admissions at the following Colleges: John Hopkins, Bard College and Washington College, where he was also Vice President. He was a special man that was loved very much and will always be treasured in our hearts.

Predeceased by his sister, Nora Seymour, and her husband, Kenneth, he leaves only fond memories to his loving sister, Evelyn Thompson, of Denville; his caring niece, Nancy T. Landry and her husband Christopher of Hudson, NH; his cherished nephew, Glenn W. Thompson, of Hopatcong; 1 great-niece, 2 great-nephews, 2 great-great nephews; and devoted friend, Laurie Townsend, and her daughter, Lauren Tanner, of Kyle, Texas.

Memorial Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 28, 2018 from 1– 3 p.m. with Funeral Service beginning at 2:15 p.m.  Memorial Donations are being accepted to Drew University Athletics or Botany Departments or Compassionate Care Hospice in Dover by way of www.inmemoryof-memorial.org.
