Obituary of Richard Alan Somerville

Richard Alan Somerville, 70, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, January 3, 2016. Born in Yonkers, NY, Richard graduated from Somerville High School and went onto Fairleigh Dickinson to receive his Bachelor's Degree. He then earned his Law Degree from the University of Baltimore. After graduation, Richard practiced law as an attorney. He started off with his own private practice in Somerville, New Jersey. Over his 45 year career, he worked for various law firms all over the state. Richard was honorably discharged from the Army after his dignified service in the Vietnam War. He was a member of the American Legion Post #279 in Lincoln Park and the Elks Lodge #1068 in Somerville. Additionally, he was a councilman in Lincoln Park for 8 years, as well as a liason to their fire department. Along with his many accomplishments, he was very proud of having his pilot's license. Richard was also an avid runner and skier. He was a kind, compassionate, generous and genuine man who will truly be missed. Left to keep his legacy alive are his loving brothers, David (Sherry) Somerville and Tom (Barbara) Somerville; his beloved longtime companion, Betty Yerkes; his adored step-daughters, Amy (Joe) Vigliotti and Megan (Danny) Lynch; his cherished step-granddaughter Hope Lynch; and many nieces and nephews. A public visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 6th from 4 – 8 pm at Norman Dean Home for Services. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Richard's memory to the Rainbow Lakes Community Club, P.O. Box 277, Denville, NJ 07834 or National Parkinson's Foundation, 200 Southeast First St., Suite 800, Miami, FL 33131. A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, January 7th at 11:00 am at Norman Dean Home for Services, 16 Righter Ave., Denville, NJ. Burial will follow at Bound Brook Cemetery, 500 Mountain Ave, Bound Brook, NJ 08805. Please leave a condolence for his family.
