Please Don't Wear Black for Me 2/23/1971 by Loretta MacPherson

Last week I watched an elaborate funeral, and as I sat there taking it all in, the feelings I felt then I am feeling right now, and so I'm revealing them to you as I say; Please don't wear black for me, and please don't send fancy flowers for everyone to see, just say a simple prayer for me on that day, so my loving God will take me forever to stay. And please don't make an elaborate show, a plain pine box is good enough to go, and do keep my coffin closed real tight, for I want to be remembered when alive and bright. Please don't waste your tears on me, but save your energies for those in need you see, and don't mourn for me when I'm dead, but help those left behind instead. So please don't wear black for me, and don't send fancy flowers for everyone to see, but rather ask yourself each day, have I helped the living by giving even one smile away.
