Obituary of John Wesley Leonard

On June 24 John W. Leonard, Jr. (JACK) 82, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family. Jack was born in Orange, NJ and as a child moved to the Cedar Lake section of Denville. First summers and later in 1945 year-round and remained in Denville ever since. He was a 1951 graduate of Boonton High after which he served in the US Navy from 1952-1956 aboard the USS Glennon. He was a member of the Tin Can Sailors and proud of it, as well a member of Denville VFW Post 2519 and American Legion Post 390. Jack was a Mason and Past Master of Jephthah Lodge No. 233, Free and Accepted Masons, as well as Past Patron of Harding Chapter No. 94 Order of Eastern Star. He was also a Past President of the Cedar Lake Community Club. He owned and operated Jack's Overhead Door Company. Jack enjoyed a lifelong love of camping with his family, and spending the cold NJ winters in sunny Orlando, FL for 13 years. Most of all he enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren play baseball, softball and soccer at all levels. The bleachers will never be the same. He is predeceased by his parents John W. Leonard and Marie Hoffman Leonard. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years Athena E. (Buchanan), sons John W. Leonard, III and his wife Lorraine, and his children John W. Leonard IV (Jay), Tara Freeman, Brian and Kyle Leonard. His son Wayne M. Leonard and his wife Dawn, children Nicole and Justin and daughter Athena Marie Hopler and her husband Donald, sons Zachary and Cole. Great grandchildren Emma and Savanna Leonard and a brother Ronald Leonard and wife Joann. A Memorial service will be held on Sat. July 4, 2015 at 10:00 AM at Denville Community Church 190 Diamond Spring Rd. Denville, NJ 07834. Donations in his honor may be made to the church.
