Douglas Roberts Smyth passed away at his home in Green Pond, NJ, surrounded by his family, on April 6, 2015. He was 80 years old. Born in Paterson, NJ to George A. Smyth and Irene G. Roberts, Doug grew up in Midland Park and attended Pompton Lakes High School. He graduated from Amherst College where he participated in the ROTC program. He served as a Captain in the U.S. Marine Corps 1956-1958. Douglas worked the majority of his career in the insurance industry, retiring from Delta Dental of NJ as Vice President of Marketing and Sales in 2000. He enjoyed being involved in his community, serving on the Rockaway Township Board of Education, as well as the Green Pond Corporation Board of Directors and the Lake End Corporation Board of Directors. Doug is survived by his wife Nancy (Coe) Smyth of Green Pond, his children Susan Scripture, Jeanne Maupai, Douglas Roberts Smyth Jr., Linda DeVries, Mary Lou Smyth, Steven Clark, and Christine Clark, and his sister, Mary Layton. He was predeceased by his sister, Jeanne Comes, and his brother, Robert Marshall Smyth. He is also survived by his 4 nieces, 15 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren. Having spent his childhood summers at the lake, then raising his family there as well, Doug treasured his life at Green Pond. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in his memory to The Green Pond Environmental Foundation (3 Shadyside Lane, Green Pond, NJ 07435).
